Obviously Rutgers is a more recognizable name. My question is: which has the better reputation for academics? Any fellow NJ residents may chime in, but I'd appreciate it if people from other states could help to answer this as well.

TCNJ all the way. Rutgers has such an inflated reputation, like NYU and BU. Rutgers is a good school, don't get me wrong, but academically, TCNJ is way more competitive, in admissions and actual academics. TCNJ's combined premed program aceptees had an average SAT of 1580 out of 1600, and were in the top 1% of thier class. TCNJ is filled with students who rejected ivys and other top tier schools because they got full rides at TCNJ. My friend rejected Havarad, Stanford, Columbia, and CalTech for TCNJ even though he got rejected from TCNJ's combined med program. Why, well he got a full ride and a free laptop, plus TCNJ is nationally ranked as one of the best premed schools in the country.

Rutgers is ok, but a lot larger, and they tend to let in alot of lower caliber students. I know idiots who got full rides at Rutgers New Brunswick this year. So definately TCNJ.

Although TCNJ is not very well-known outside of New Jersey, it definitely has better academics than Rutgers.

I think TCNJ is better academically. The school itself is obviously smaller, with smaller class sizes than Rutgers. Also, the average SAT, GPA, and ranks are higher at TCNJ overall. However, as previously mentioned, Rutgers has better name recognition outside of New Jersey.

"Rutgers is ok, but a lot larger, and they tend to let in alot of lower caliber students. I know idiots who got full rides at Rutgers New Brunswick this year. So definately TCNJ." I do not necessarily agree with this post. I believe that Rutgers and TCNJ both use the same GPA (Class Percentile)/SAT chart, although I could be mistaken. Therefore, I believe that these "idiots" could probably have received full scholarships to TCNJ as well. However, I do agree with the overall point that TCNJ is better on the subject of academics. Then again, I am a little biased: TCNJ Class of 2010!

I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Actually that not true. I believe their sats were around the 1700 range. Maybe is AA, but I find that hard to believe.

why can't TCNJ change its name to something more.....i don't know.....unweird? i think its a pretty bad name. just saying it. CALM DOWN.

http://admissions.rutgers.edu/080101.asp

yeah, these kids must have received full rides for some other reason. Maybe not academics?

LOL, yeah now I remember, EOP. Through EOP lower caliber students get financial assistance at certain colleges. i remember another friend couldn't quailify for EOP because her SATs and GPA was to high, but she would have qualified financially.

While Rutgers has some problems it seems to have a far more qualified faculty and better more advanced facilities and libraries.

A better average SAT score of its students does not mean TCNJ is better academically.

As barrons stated, TCNJ does not have the world-class faculty and facilities that Rutgers has, nor does it have the same opportunities for research.

They're just really totally different schools... it's hard to compare the two... one is a very large research university and one is a tiny liberal arts college.

Insane Membrane, where do they have rankings of schools for premed? If you have a site I would appreciate it.

"why can't TCNJ change its name to something more.....i don't know.....unweird? i think its a pretty bad name. just saying it. CALM DOWN."

isnt it the former name of princeton or sumn?

Premed is not a major Kono. The best thing to do is look at the Rankings of the Biological and Physical Science Departments. Both of which Rutgers is rated highly for.

The premed program Insane_Membrane is talking about is probably the combined BS/MD program with UMDNJ. I can not speak for him/her though.

wow I just noticed this is going to be the first reply in this thread in 6 months.

Any thoughts on Rutgers SAS Honors vs TCNJ?

<isnt it="" the="" former="" name="" of="" princeton="" or="" sumn?=""></isnt>

Yes, and there was a lawsuit about it. Princeton was the original "College of NJ" until it changed its name.

TCNJ used to be called, in the not-so-distant past (ten years ago, maybe?), Trenton State. The administration and trustees decided that having "Trenton" in the name scared away too many students, so they wanted something less urban sounding. The name change came as the college started rising in reputation and wanted to attract more serious students. It worked.

Which is better? Rutgers or TCNJ? Both have good reputations in-state. Rutgers has a more national reputation, primarily because of its size, graduate programs, and research faculty/facilities. TCNJ is more of an undergraduate-centric school. Don't worry about reputation as much as which kind of environment is right for you.

I don't know very much so anyone can prove me wrong here.

Doesn't Rutgers only have a much better reputation because it is more established? In the national sectore, TCNJ is very new. It will take time to make its name and become one with the elite public schools.

not really, tcnj is actually pretty bad when compared to rutgers. the stuff about kids rejecting ivies to get a full ride at tcnj is completel bull$hit.

outside of NJ, tcnj is just another college. when job hunting, the reputation of your school is one of the most important things, no matter how you want to stomach that fact. every ivy or top 30 school ranked graduate will have an advantage over you. TCNJ isn't even on the top 100 ranked school anyway. honesty, an endowment of 6 million is literally next to nothing. just think of the costs to run an educational institution. my high school (public) has a larger endowment than that.

I just want to point out that it isn't ranked in the top 100 because it doesn't have a PhD department. USNews ranks it in the Master's colleges. There it is considered number 5 in the northeast (can anyone give an updated ranking? I think this is a bit old). It's also considered the number 1 public school in the northeast. (I have no clue where I heard this. It may have been from the website but I understand if you don't have a positive reaction to this statistic.)

Oh and the think about kids rejecting ivies because they got a full ride is not crap. My friend rejected UPenn for TCNJ because he got a full ride so I know that's true first hand. My tour guide there also rejected JHU for TCNJ so I wouldn't consider that bad either.

Ditto to karen. I rejected Uva, JHU, and Northwestern for Rutgers. It's worth it to not pay $200,000 and I'm definitely happy I made that decision. It also depends on what field you're going into. I'm pre-med and you will be as successful at Rutgers or TCNJ than anywhere else if you maintain the same level of ambition or drive that got you into the top-tier schools (I'd argue that Rutgers is a much better place for a pre-med than TCNJ, but that's not my place here :) ).
