I am currently stuck with two colleges because of my financial aid situation. I am thinking about doing possibly a biomedical engineering major or any other science that could qualify myself for the MCATs.

Do any of you know if TCNJ or Rutgers is better in this kind of field?

Also, is it really true that TCNJ is consisted of almost all white people? What are the chances of me seeing an Asian person if i go there?

hey guys thanks for ur help, but i dun get wat u said... i called u a sexual slur? huh? lol

Here is my problem tho. I am afraid that Rutgers has so many people that they will not give me enough individual attention. Moreover, it also seems that Rutgers treats the honors people so much better, and I am not honors. This will be one hard decision.

Yup Rutgers is in a completely different league that TCNJ. Its a great school. TCNJ is crap. Its not even a university. Plus, it used to be called Trenton State. Hhaha...why would you even think about going there?

I have no clue lol my guidance counselor said TCNJ this year is really good. A lot of people in my school would rather go to TCNJ. Or ill just have to pay like 40 grand a year for one of my other schools lol.

I'm also from NJ, and was advised by my guidance counselor to apply to an in-state public school just in case money fell through at a lot of the private colleges I was applying to. I applied to TCNJ because I liked the thought of a small campus. The more I learned about the campus, visited, etc., the less I liked it. Fortunately I'm not going there in the fall, but if that was my only option, I probably would have wished I had applied to Rutgers.

TCNJ has only become "selective" in the past few years. ANY school can become selective if they begin to reject applicants with so-so SATs or GPAs. When I visited the campus, I found it to be kind of stuffy. I was interviewed by current students for a scholarship, and they all told me TCNJ was their last choice school, which I found funny, since they should have been advertising their college well to prospective students.

Rutgers has national name recognition. That isn't meant to be pretentious in the least bit. But if after graduation you decide you want to move to California and find a job, an employer will recognize Rutgers on your resume. They probably wont know much, if anything, about TCNJ.

It seems to me that TCNJ attracts the silent, studious types. EVERYONE I know who has gone to Rutgers (regardless of how active/inactive they were in high school) has gotten involved, found their niche, and really done something with themselves.

I'm also unhappy with TCNJ's lack of attention and initative taken regarding their missing student.

Thanks, that was some very good help. I guess i will enroll in Rutgers very soon. Plus, i don't wanna be like the only Asian kid sitting in my class all the time lol. (not being racist or anything)

Go with Rutgers, it has the better reputation. And you are a NJ resident right? Rutgers is a state school, so there might be an applicable state resident tuition rate. Im not so sure, I live in NY.

My son is currently choosing from among TCNJ, Rutgers, Univ. of Maryland and Lehigh. He is interested in pursuing computer engineering. We are down to the wire and he will be making his final decision this weekend. He has just about eliminated Rutgers, not because there is anything wrong with the engineering program, but because the school is just way too big for him. The idea of attending a college that is more like "a city" does not appeal to him and he feels lost there. He is definitely leaning towards TCNJ because he loves the idea of small classes and close contact with his professors. We have visited several times and he feels very comfortable there. Just got back from the Univ. of Maryland today and although he loved the academics, the size of the campus put him off as well. It's definitely a personal preference. I have only heard positive things about TCNJ and it seems like a good match.

Lehigh has a great reputation for engineering but there are a couple of negatives along with with the fact that the tuition is vert high. There is a huge greek scene and a lot of drinking on campus. Also, the campus is far from flat -- lots of huge hills that can be tiresome to navigate every day just to get to class. I heard that everyone that goes there develops lots of muscles in their calves from all of the walking up and down the hills. But yes, the engineering program is supposed to be top-notch.

Don't rely on some sour grapes from another applicant(s) to base your final decision.

State schools like TCNJ and Rutgers post all statistical information on their websites. If you want to know the race distribution of either of those schools, look it up, it is there.

Haven't you checked with either science program to see what their med school admission rates are? Or the percentage of students taking the MCATs?

TCNJ has a retention rate of 95%. Check into it, there might be a reason why.

I didn't mean to sound so bitter in my last post. :) I simply found TCNJ to be a little overinflated and full of themselves, as, of course, many colleges very well are. (I've seen more than my share of pretentious colleges over the course of my college search!)

Once again, Rutgers definitely has the reputation working for it. Obviously a main reason it's nationally known is because of its sheer size, which can be a turn-off for some people (it was actually the reason I originally preferred TCNJ). In most colleges, however, your intro classes will be large and somewhat impersonal, and grow smaller and more intimate with time.

Rutgers may not quite have the stats of TCNJ, but being such a large university, Rutgers has quite a few more spots to fill. The truth? You'll probably be content wherever you go. I just personally feel Rutgers has a few advantages.

hey lisa, im in the same situation. I kinda took Rutgers out too cause like you said, too many people. However, TCNJ engineering i heard is not even close to being as good as Rutgers Engineering. Now I might even gear towards a pre-med/business track and maybe go to Binghamton. I have no clue now lol it sucks when you have to choose one of these since you cant even afford other ones. :(
