See, W&M has ED, UVA does NOT. But W&M's ED is a committed ED, so if I get accepted there via ED, I'm supposed to attend.

Both are equal in my mind for quality, but I'm hoping some of you can help me decide whether or not to commit myself to W&M's ED (if I get accepted).

So...what do you guys think? UVA or W&M? I'm leaning towards W&M, but I'm really split because I really like both schools...Help! ;-;

Well, I considered RD, but I just like the ED option for some reason. Plus, what if I got into both? I'd still be split! ='(

I mean, if I choose W&M, I will apply to UVA RD if I 1) Don't get ED for W&M or 2) If the UVA deadline is before I receive my response to my ED submission.

But really, it's less about the ED, and more about which one is better for me. I'm just looking for opinions on which sounds better for the type of person I am. If you guys confirm for me that W&M is the best for me, than I'll apply ED there. If not, then I'll apply RD to both.

W&M. Just my opinion based on academics, but I'm not gonna get too in-depth because I've debated this with some classmates after school for hours. -_-

Academic quality is top-notch for both. But:

i live in VA and i think you DEFINITELY sound like a better fit for W&M. i have a friend who felt similarly about the two schools and decided to apply ED to W&M and got in. she's very happy with her decision. you can only go to one school anyway.

Alrighty then. =3 I'll do that. I've been leaning towards W&M for a while...UVA is really similar in cost, acceptance rate, and programs...the only difference I really found was the size.

Big things often confuse me...as strange as that sounds...but when I navigated through the W&M site, it just appealed to me more. I felt like everything was in order there...I know it's just a site, but the school website can tell a lot about it. =P

UVA just sounded nice...and I've been on the campus before and met with members (and the head of) their Japanese department...and spoken to her in Japanese. ;-; I really liked the campus and it seemed nice, but W&M just keeps sticking to me...so I guess that means something.

Thanks for the help guys. =3

I've decided to do everything that might help me: the summer interviews, Subject Tests, both SAT and ACT, and anything else I can think of. I want them to really see the real me, since that's supposedly just as important as my Academic record. Oh...and a killer essay...I should start planning that thing now. xD

Uhmm, I am not so sure W&M is your match. You seem like a creative, intellectual thinker, etc. From my experiences, W&M is a great school, but I find it to be very preppy and "white." Yes, the class sizes are better than UVA's but UVA is an amazing school, better than W&M(I am sure some will disagree). But!!! If you love W&M make it your first choice, but if you are stuck in between the two, maybe you should just apply RD and see which one gives you a better bargain.

We visited both with oldest D...would have said that the school that was the most "preppy and white" was UVA. Youngest D will probably apply to W&M out-of-state. She won't consider UVA, even though it is a great school, partly because of size and also because she thought the student body at W&M was a better fit for her. You sound a lot like her and I thought right away that W&M would probably be the better fit for you as well.

A visit to each should help you decide. I don't think you should apply ED anywhere if you're not sure that is where you prefer to be but again, it will probably be clear after visiting. Good luck! You probably have a good shot at both in-state!

I thought that Early Decision for William and Mary was over?

My friend got her Early Decision acceptance letter from W&M ages ago.

Anyway, it sounds like you'd be a better fit for William and Mary. The academics at both are great, you'll get a good education at either college.

The cons of W&M is the town... it is in Williamsburg, which isn't exactly exciting. Most of the stores and restaurants are tourist-y places, and there's not much to do after dark. There is fun stuff to do on campus, but if you care about local atmosphere, it can get a bit dull.

UVA is a lot preppier than W&M... people dress up in button-downs and heels to go to the football games. The student body can tend to come off as snobby and homogenous to an outsider.

From the sound of you, though, I think you'd be happier at William and Mary. I've applied there as well, so maybe I will see you next year. :)

@em1442: the OP is referring to next year or some time following; she said she doesn't have SAT/ACT scores yet, so she's not a senior.

@OP: I'm not too familiar with UVA, but I've done some research of W&M, and your preference of smaller groups and your introversion seem to suggest that W&M is more your style. Smaller colleges and introverts tend to get along, it seems, just because they don't feel overwhelmed by massive amounts of people in classes. At least, that's the way I rationalize it when I tell my parents that I'm applying to small colleges.

By the way, you have a great shot at both. :) But W&M just seems right for you, from my perspective.

LKei, the cons of W&M do not outweigh the pros, and I wish to make that clear. W&M is an amazing school. But from experience, the student body is not what I would call "unique." I know that you did not ask for that originally, but I always found that diversity at a college is a great asset. Not to generalize, but W&M seems "preppy" and "white." I am not sure UVA really differs, because say the UVA student body is the "elitist" type. W&M location also might be a negative for some people. Williamsburg(one of my favorite places) is quite touristy. And a lot of off campus things to do might consist of walking around colonial Williamsburg. It might get boring fast?

I highly recommend going to W&M to any student, BUT, I am just throwing possible negatives out there. I wish you the best in your decision.

Thanks for all the input, guys! Yeah, I'm referring to the upcoming fall. I'm a Junior at the moment. =P

I didn't expect all the "great shots!" though. xD But I am determined to do as well as possible on the SAT/ACT and Subject Tests. I've even done something totally out of character for me and made an entire plan of study. ><

I just need to get the last part of my Jap III exam (which I think I'm bombing...) out of the way and then step it up this semester.

I'm planning to do things ahead of time, even when they're not due soon. I guess even I can get into the spirit. xD

I feel a little out of place though...no one I know besides one friend has started any planning yet. O-o I'm starting to wonder if they know how complicated things are, as my school does little to help students prep for college admissions/applications.

Anyway, I'll be visiting both (and my other choices) either on a Saturday or in the summer, and I'm planning on information sessions for both too. I've even made myself stick the date "May 1" in my head because that's when W&M Summer Interview sessions begin. xD

Oh, well...I'll get this sorted out. You guys have pretty much confirmed what I was suspecting, so thanks a lot.

Along with the informative email I got from W&M admissions in response to my many questions, this has pretty much cleared up any doubt I had.
