Beyond the tour--life at Oberlin

Visiting Oberlin this weekend and wanted insider views about life at Oberlin. Thoughts about restaurants, cool places in the surrounding area and the dynamics of student life on campus would be really helpful. Other colleges of interest include Hampshire, Bard, Lewis&Clark and Pitzer. Looking for multi faceted academic experience with opportunities to apply my love of making music to effect positive social change.

There are more than 1000 posts on this site intended to address that very question: [Oberlin Blogs](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/)

Thanks Dave–I read the post about the depressing campus but most of the responses seem to focus on the weather or the campus buildings and many seem to be posted by prospective students who are trying to get in. The blog seemed more about individual perspectives/philosophy than what differentiates Oberlin from other colleges so any direction or links to these other 1000 posts about the dynamics of student life would be much appreciated!

Did you go to the Oberlin blog site at [Oberlin Blogs](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/?)

You wrote you were " Looking for multi faceted academic experience with opportunities to apply my love of making music to effect positive social change." and Oberlin seems to fit the bill.

Tak a look at Excos [Courses - ExCo](Index of /courses), the event calendar [Calendar - Oberlin College](http://new.oberlin.edu/calendar/) , the coops [OSCA - Wilder Hall 402](http://osca.wilder.oberlin.edu/), winterterm group projects, [Oberlin College | Office of Winter Term | Group Projects](http://new.oberlin.edu/office/winter-term/projects/types-of-projects/group-projects.dot) and the social justice institute [Oberlin College Ombuds Office](http://www.oberlin.edu/ombudsperson/socjust.htm) links. These may give you a little more info about what makes oberlin unique.

Bard has many more graduation and distribution requirements.

Yep, bzipp, just click the link I gave you. ;-)

@bzipp - When Dave72 refers to “this site” he actually is referring to the [Oberlin blogs/url and not the site we are currently on (College Confidential). Dave72 is correct that the blogs are the best place to actually see and hear what is happening here. They are written by current students, faculty, and staff as a collection of first person perspectives about what going to school here and living here is like in the day to day.

The top color bars on the [url=<a href=“http://blogs.oberlin.edu/]blog”>http://blogs.oberlin.edu/]blog site](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/) are drop down menus to specific topics, and clicking on each of those will take you to all the posts that are archived for that specific category.

Sounds like you might want to start off by reading from the following categories:

[Oberlin Blogs | Student Life & Culture](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/community/life_culture/index.shtml)

[Oberlin Blogs | Events](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/community/events/index.shtml)

[Oberlin Blogs | Music, Theater, & The Arts](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/community/music_theater_arts/index.shtml)

[Oberlin Blogs | Oberlin’s Campus](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/living/campus/index.shtml)

[Oberlin Blogs | The Town of Oberlin](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/living/town/index.shtml)

[Oberlin Blogs | Food & Dining](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/living/dining/index.shtml)

But we do recommend exploring beyond these categories too. Commenting on any post by a current student will alert them to your questions, and they’ll respond relatively quickly if you’re wondering about something they’ve written about.

Had a wonderful visit and really felt the personality of the school shined. Lunch at Aladins and a jaw dropping visit to the museum. Fingers crossed!

Ive heard there are need based fulll scholarships available
Ive also hear that they are more likely to give loans .
So Im wondering which is (or are both) correct.

Thanks very much
Marsha

Oberlin’s policy is to meet the full demonstrated financial need of every accepted student. This is usually through a package of scholarships (most need-based, some merit-based) and loans; the loan part of the package is always much smaller.
