BFA Acting Class of 2023: preparation, prescreens, auditions, questions and support

Got our first acceptance today! Missouri State, the program where Joe Price went to after he left MN-Guthrie over the summer. S still has several other schools he wants to hear from, but this mom is breathing a big sigh of relief. We will not come up empty!

@MomMimi Congrats on Missouri State! The first yes is always nice!

Regarding UNCSA…It is absolutely an outstanding program BUT my anxiety raises up about 10 levels for those of you waiting for hear from them. My D auditioned there last year for their high school senior year acting program, and the aftermath of waiting for an answer was a real mess. That school really needs to do something about their notification policy for rejections and waitlists. If they want you, you will know fairly quickly with a phone call, and I send many congratulations to those of you with kids who have gotten those phone calls. Unfortunately, everyone else is just left hanging, especially those they don’t want to reject yet but don’t have room for. Very little is done to keep you apprised of a waitlist status and rejections come in waves. My D didn’t get the phone call when her classmate did, so we figured a rejection was imminent. But when a rejection never came in the mail, we all sat around holding out hope. Finally I was tired of waiting and called Bill Poole. I think that man is great, but I also think 90% of his job description must be talking parents off the ledge and assuring them than an answer should come soon. Personally, I think he knows a lot about who is in and who is out, but don’t think you are getting an answer over the phone because you aren’t. He’s a great conversationalist and seems to be very eager to help, but when you sit back and reflect on the conversation you had with him, you realize that you have absolutely no more information than you had before you called him. To be honest, I think eventually most kids who don’t get the phone call are rejected. Hopefully UNCSA will one day step up their professionalism as far as how they handle letting people know what is going on. It would not surprise me in the least to know that there are current UNCSA students spilling the beans on Facebook about all of the acceptance phone calls being made when so many kids are still sitting around waiting for a phone call or letter or something! It makes me really grateful for schools that inform you that all decisions are uploaded to a portal on a certain day, or even schools that send out rejections quickly. That can sting in the moment, but by the next week your child is over it, instead of sitting around for weeks feeling like they are unable to make a decision about the trajectory of their future until they hear from that one last school. I think for many of you, that one last school is going to be UNCSA and I’m sorry. I really hope you get your answers sooner than later.

My D just got a call from UNCSA. She’s on a “very short” waitlist and is very excited!

oops

Got into Ithaca.

YAY @hamdog123! So happy for you!

Great news @Gapyearguru !

Wonderful @MomMimi - such a relief to have them “in” at a program they can love!

Congratulations @MomMimi, @Gapyearguru, and @hamdog123!

I just happened to check in. Used to be quite active here. Excited for everyone.

@loudclappingmom I am sorry to hear about your experience with the UNCSA high school program last year. I have to say that the BFA program sends out rejections fairly quickly for many kids (in our experience). I do think there may be some who are in a holding pattern until the final decisions are made but then all go out ASAP. They did rejections by email this year so hopefully those will be sent soon if they haven’t already.

I also have to say I just returned from a weekend visit there and the current students absolutely do NOT know who got in or if phone calls were made. There was a lot of talk about it, but the current students simply didn’t know (as they shouldn’t know - this is confidential info at this point). The drama faculty at UNCSA are very professional and do the best they can. The admissions department may be a different story with releasing emails or letters (of rejection for example). I do think they take a bit longer, which is not fun for anyone.
But any contact from the actual BFA drama department is very quick and thorough. (by the way - we found the same with several schools — the drama dept was great, but the admissions dept less than great when it came to communication).

I hope all get their answers soon. Hang in there everyone. It will all work out and you will know where your kids are going soon enough.

@bfahopeful It is so nice to know that the UNCSA college program is run more efficiently than the high school program in terms of notifications! I’m sure everyone on CC waiting on UNCSA is relieved to hear that. We aren’t waiting to hear from them, but we are waiting to hear from others, and of course the waiting is the worst!

@Gapyearguru and @hamdog123 Congrats!

@loudclappingmom We had the same experience you did with waiting for results from the audition for the high school program last year. Completely agree with your statement about being grateful for schools that inform you that all decisions are uploaded to a portal on a certain day, or even schools that send out rejections quickly. My D knows lots of kids still waiting to hear anything from UNCSA on their BFA audition results.

If it helps anyone about UNCSA, it sounds like (from other posters) decisions started rolling out late last week into this week. All the “official” emails or portal notifications come from admissions and this may take a bit longer for them to process. The phone calls or emails from drama may be faster as the admissions Dept needs to process long lists of hundreds or thousands of kids in all majors before those notifications are sent. But the drama Dept can call the 30 or so kids accepted as soon as decisions are made.

I would guess the admissions Dept is processing the results as we speak. I would bet all will know within the week one way or another.

This is the same for other schools. For example CMU calls those admitted before the “date” that all official notifications go out. So most know if they didn’t get the call, they didn’t get in. SMU and Pace were also similar for us (Pace’s artistic acceptance came by phone call before an official letter came related to artistic decision).

Webster was the last to notify for us and they told all, either way, on the very last day they could (our year anyway).

I have no experience with the uncsa high school program. Sounds like they “held” kids they liked until the last minute. That is so difficult. We know some MT kids who fell into that with certain BFA schools. Some schools would tell them they hadn’t been released or accepted yet -but others said nothing until the last day a decision could be made. And then they were rejected. Very hard! Don’t wish that on anyone. I guess the upside is that no news means you are still being considered.

Again, best wishes to all.

Woo hoo! My D just got a call of Hank Stratton at University of Arizona offering her acceptance to the BFA for Acting.

@tlm333 Congrats on University of Arizona!

As we all anxiously await some sort of validation, it may help stress levels to put things in perspective. Consider the following:

Of the 20 nominations for Best Actor/Actress or Best Supporting Actor/Actress this past weekend, a grand total of 2 (two) received BFAs.

For each of our kids, the end result of this very mad season is just another fork in the road, and probably much much less important than many of us (who are not in ‘the business’) can imagine.

YAY @tlm333 ! That’s wonderful! A friend of my D’s is there for MT and very happy!

Congrats, @tim333!

@time333 Congrats on AZ! One of my S’s closest friends is Freshman in the program and absolutely loves it!!

Congrats to all the good news recipients today!
