BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

@breakingbarriers2018 Welcome!!! We’re in Orange County, CA, not too far from you, and my D is half-Asian. She got great reception from the Midwest region

We got the dreaded UNCSA letter today and we are in CT- auditioned in Chicago, if this helps at all.

Ugh… the dreaded letter. I feel your pain @laylamom.
She auditioned in NYC. There was some diversity but not as much as I had hoped for and hardly any Asian or Hispanic kids. I was hoping that that would be to her advantage but when I did my own research I didn’t see many Asian kids at all in these programs, not compared to Caucasian or African American. Auditioning is not her strong suit and with only two months to prepare I have no idea how things went. I will say that she had a great time during the audition process however she came across in the room! I am very grateful for that. And so grateful for a supportive forum. It makes me happy to see some of these young people getting into such exciting programs. Thank you all!!!

@breakingbarriers2018 One of my daughters close friends is a lovely young Asian woman who is now a Freshman at Emerson BFA MT. She did this crazy process last year with very good results. She is a bit of an activist in the best of ways.
It is a good time to be in the theatre world!

@breakingbarriers2018 my D graduated from NYU Tisch 2018 and she had a very diverse class. I am sure you’re D will land somewhere!

I wrote this on another thread and can’t find it! I am a blooming mess!!
D’s rejection letter from UNCSA is recommending that she re-apply next year? Is this normal or are the super kind rejectors lol : / ??

It is great to hear of other students like my D getting into good schools. She has been accepted to SOU (audition) and our local U which is a non-audition program. So, she will have some place to go even if they weren’t her original top choices. I sincerely hope we can all look back on this time 4 years from now and say our children ended up right where they needed to be.

Hi @laylamom! I wrote you on the other thread as well (Class of 2022 venting one). That is NOT the standard rejection letter. Your D should give herself a pat on the back for a good audition. I do think they are genuine in encouraging her to reapply. Message me if you want!

I have heard multiple success stories where kids auditioned a year after getting a rejection letter and got in. At least you are honest and stated auditioning isn’t your child’s strong suit. You have almost a year to turn that weakness into a strength. There are many great coaches who can help. Use your resources and ask around and find that coach that can take your child to the next level. Hard work and the right people should lead to a much better chance for success.

@laylamom that really is a great rejection letter! I hope your D feels pretty good about that.
I would be very interested to hear of coaches that you all liked. Thanks for that suggestion @2lights. She has worked with acting coaches some and even worked with a Juilliard grad who offered to write her a letter of rec… but that was just for a few weeks…

@laylamom I second what @FourStars said-UNCSA does not tell all kids to re-apply. They really mean it when they say it and only send such an invitation to some of the applicants. We know 2 kids who got that letter and did re-apply and both got in the 2nd year they auditioned.

Thank you so much @bfahopeful and @FourStars! It is an encouraging moment. I appreciate this forum more than I can say.

@laylamom your UNCSA letter sounds like the one many of us wanted! Our was a pretty clear “no”. This process is maddening!!!

I was wondering if anyone knows when decisions come back for FSU BA Theatre? My daughter did not pass the FSU MT prescreen so we are looking at this option? Thank you

When is Ithaca’s next round of communication expected? Does anyone know?

@mandidnam last year my D got her FSU BA acceptance long before her audition at Unifieds. I believe it was first week of December. Strange that you haven’t heard yet.

@marge928 Thanks for the response. My D switched her application from BFA MT to BA theatre in January due to not passing the prescreen for the BFA so haven’t heard anything yet. Does your D attend FSU?

@FourStars someone on the MT thread posted their acceptance. She got it via regular mail today. My d got her rejection in the mail two days ago, postmarked the 21st (which may have gone out the same day as the acceptances). :frowning:

No she is at LMU in LA. Florida State’s BFA program is amazing but they take very few kids… I think maybe they took six girls last year and she did not make the cut. Anyone who is considering a BA at a school that already has a BFA just do your research and make sure there are going to be enough opportunities. My daughter did end up at a BA program but at a school that does not have a BFA. Another thing I made sure I looked into was the number of credits at the BA programs. You would be surprised but there is a very big range. If memory serves me right schools that have great BFA programs like Rutgers and Florida State actually had very few credits in the BA Theater.

Thank you for the information. Hope your D loves LMU!! @marg928
