@marg928, @ThenSheSaidIt and a few others who went through this last year - Thank you! We need & love your perspective and advice. Keep sharing!
Hooray, @dramamama2022! That is a great program! Good luck figuring out the finances! I have a feeling it will all work out.
@dramamama2022 Congrats to your daughter! Also, thanks for sharing her rejections. It helps put in perspective how difficult this process is and also gives hope for acceptances into other programs. Michigan is an incredible school and program! I hope you can make finances work.
@emf1959 My d was also accepted to Miami of Ohio for acting. I hope someone responds. I havenât been able to find any info on college confidential.
@0827NJ My sons Theatre teacher said they had a great program.
@emf1959 @0827NJ Did your kids visit and audition on campus for Miami Ohio? My D did, she was also accepted w/ great merit offer. She really loved the campus. The school as a whole is amazing, but the theatre dept. is relatively small and offers a BA degree. But becuz itâs BA, itâd be possible to double major or minor in something else. For what my D wants to accomplish, it isnât ideal, even though the schoolâs got great reputation and isnât an easy one to get in academically. So itâs definitely on our âsafetyâ list, but not a top choice right now, unless everything weâre waiting on fails.
@mychildsslave (love that name) We did not visit Miami U yetâŠwe are in NJ so bit of a shlep. I would love my son to
double major! I am a very practical person and would like him to have something to fall back on.
@emf1959 - Miami U is a popular draw for kids from the Chicago area. My niece went there and loved it. Good school! I recommend going there when the school is in session. Large lively campus. When school is out, itâs a sleepy town.
@emf1959 If you read up on the dept, all its faculty members and courses offered, youâll get a good sense of the program. The director was incredibly kind and passionate, and seemed very supportive of students minoring or doubling in something else. I was told that becuz it is a BA program, the students tend to end up specializing in various areas of theatre, so they canât do a senior showcase (let say for acting, if they only have 3 students concentrating on acting that year). But they do offer a strong network of alumni support and connection. The school is gorgeous, but very rural (literally in the middle of cornfield). My D and husband loved it. I, as a city person my whole life, was a little taken back.
Lurking junior mother hereâcan I distract you from the waiting with a few questions as my D and I are planning timetable for application prep? Re. pre-screens: I know that different schools have specific requirements, but Iâm wondering about the relationship between monologues chosen for prescreens and those used for on-campus and Unifieds. Similar? distinctive? or does it matter? Do most people produce these at school or at home or are they done professionally? Is this expensive?
What is a âstretchâ monologue? I noticed that term in a few posts and I donât know what it is.
I also wondered about common essay supplement topics specific to PA programs (as opposed to supplements for academic admission).
Thank you very much and BAL to your kids!
Re: prescreens - like everything in this process - it depends. Some schools require you to use the same monologues for prescreens as you will use for the audition. Schools are not looking for professional recordings. Good lighting and sound with an IPhone or camera would be fine. Some coaches will offer to assist with prescreens - itâs nice if you have this option since you can generally knock them out at the same time. A stretch monologue is generally a character you would never play in real life (opposite gender, race, different age, etc). The PA programs will generally ask you for an arts supplement. What influences your art, why do you do your art, what compels you, etc.
I pretty much concur with artskids regarding prescreens. My D used the same monologues as PreScreens, though she had different lengths available for different schools. You absolutely can shoot it yourself using an iPhone, but good lighting is worth figuring out.
@yorkside the only school my D applied to last year that required a stretch piece was U Minn/Guthrie.
Yeah, none of my Dâs schools wanted a stretch piece. In fact, all of them made a big point of saying do characters that you could be cast as right now. (She didnât apply to Minn Guthrie, which seems to be the exception. )
^^^just to add to the monologue discussion - your student will want to have a number of alternative monologues in his/her rep. It is not unusual for a school to request additional monologues which are distinguishable from the others presented (e.g., if you presented a dramatic Shakespeare, a comedic alternative is a good one to have in the rep).
Did Depaul have a call back?
\
Congratulations !
congratulations
@robinmom Depaul requires pre screen videos. If you pass, you get the audition. That is their call back. The director of admissions told us at the callback that 1,100 students sent in pre screens. About 300 were invited to audition live, For the 20 spots in acting.
Anyone else audition for TX State? D just got an email welcoming her to the âBFA Acting Priority Hold Group.â Yay, but they are making rolling offers up until May 1, so more waiting!
