I have been a musical theater kid my entire life, with some degree of success, I might add. I recently auditioned for all BFA acting programs simply because I’m just not confident that I my voice and dancing not abilities were as strong as my acting. That being said I am not left to choose among the schools I was accepted into. However now I am realizing that I’m not getting a musical theater degree, and it is very different training. I guess my question is is it still possible to pursue musical theater with a degree in BFA Acting? Am I simply limited to film and straight theater?
No, you are not limited. There are many people with acting degrees, other degrees or no degrees that find work in musical theater. But to make this more feasible, you may want to supplement your acting degree by taking voice and dance lessons. Depending on your school, this probably will need to happen outside of school and be paid for outside of your tuition. But if musical theater is still on your radar, you will want to continue to work on these skills in addition to the acting training you will get with your BFA Acting degree.
Totally agree with @vvnstar - some of the most prolific, talented and “long-lived” musical theater stars have an acting background. Those with strong acting training tend to be more versatile. I also agree that you will need to get vocal and dance training added to your education somehow. You may only need to get enough dance skill to be " a singer/actor who moves well", but you will want to develop your vocal skill as much as possible.
