In looking at the Big List, there are not as many BM MT programs. My D is wanting a MT program that is weighted more heavily toward music as opposed to one that is weighted heavily in dance or even acting. Are any of you aware of specific BFA programs that have an emphasis that is geared more to a BM student?
Checkout The Catholic University of America in DC.They are a BM and might be what you are looking for. Beautiful campus and right near city so they do a lot of work with the city theaters.
The BFA MT at SUNY Fredonia has a “Music Track”
Baldwin Wallace and OCU’s MT programs are both Bachelor of Music degrees.
I have no direct knowledge- but imagine that NYU Stenhardt has a great music emphasis (since it is through school of music rather than Tisch)
She will definitely apply to the more well known BM programs (OCU, Belmont, BW), but I’m not sure there are enough BM programs to make us feel like we have a great shot at a financially feasible school. NYU is a great school but isn’t financially feasible for us. That’s why I’m wondering about BFA programs that might lean more heavily toward the music side of MT.
I am thinking my question wasn’t worded correctly. Sorry.
You can do a BFA with a music minor?
Look at Rider – The school’s long history with the Westminster Choir College makes it really a special place for singers with great voice teachers/vocal technique. The program recently shifted from being a BM to a BFA. Rider also offers strong academic merit aid.
JMU has a BM in Music Theatre through the School of Music, and a BA in Musical Theatre through the School of Theatre and Dance. The BM degree is very music heavy… same course work as all music majors with a small group of courses in theatre, musical theatre, and dance.
It is also possible to minor in Music with the BA Musical Theatre degree if a student wants more music coursework.
@KatMT I didn’t know there were 2 options at JMU. Is the BM program audition for admittance?
@theatrework – the BM is also admission for admittance, but the audition is through the School of Music. Prospective students can audition for both the BA Musical Theatre Major and the BM Music Theatre emphasis and if admitted to both choose the program for which they think they are best suited.
When auditioning for the School of Music BM program, you follow the School of Music guidelines with voice as primary instrument. All freshmen music majors with voice as their primary instrument follow a similar course of study for the first year, and then audition for their specific emphasis at the end of freshman year jury.
Students in the BM and BA programs are integrated in some classes and performance opportunities.
My D did the open call in NYC on Friday. Rider emailed her about sending in an application. It was a kind of general email. Did everyone who auditioned get one or does the email mean they are interested in her for MT? We don’t want to pay another application fee unless this is a serious possibiilty.
@emdpraze, I think this posted in the wrong thread.
Though somewhat in the unknown zone since the program hasn’t started, you may want to look at the new MT Program at the Manhattan School of Music. Also, Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music are merging which may change things up a bit there.
@mom2MTgal sorry about that. I did post it in another thread as well.
FSU has both a BFA and a BM in Music Theatre. It’s all one program (the auditions are held all together) and the students themselves choose whether they want to pursue the BFA or the BM, either before the audition or after acceptance. The curricula are the same as far as the core acting, vocal and workshop requirements, but the BM is indeed heavier in music theory, music history, conducting, etc. (The BFA has tech theatre, directing, play analysis, etc.) I’d be glad to answer any questions
