I was curious which more people thought were more important, boyfriend/girlfriends or best friends. My gf and I were discussing this, and I just wanted to see other peoples point of view. And please, add insight rather than just choose one. :-p

obviously best friends. at least you can depend on your best friend to not dump you when he/she feels like it

Depends on your age and the girl. Odds are that if you are in high school, youll keep your best friends but eventually dump your GF. And besides, would you really want one or the other that would make you chose between the two?

Best friends :) relationships never really work out in high school. at least thats my experience. way too much competition and grades and stuff get in the way.
i find high school to be an experience where it seems more appealing to try different things rather than commit yourself to one person for 4 years. you find the fun in having different dates for dances and making different friends rather than being bound to one person. its all about being immature and silly and bouncing in this Mcdonald's playpen called HIGH SCHOOL because once we go to college, we`ll have crackdown and think about the future.

What if your bf/gf is your best friend?

:)

well once the relationship is over....
itll be tough.

Best friends. Even better, best friends that become boyfriends/girlfriends..

If someone did actual studies on high school relationships that actually lasted into adulthood 25+ range I would imagine it would be less than 10%. It has been suggested by those that study this type of thing that we form minor imprintings (relationships) with people in our adolescent years, but do not form a long-lasting imprinting onto another person until we reach about the 20+ range. I think it is kind of a playing the field mentality to see what's out there and then after we've seen what's out there we make our choice and tend to stick with it longer in our early twenties and beyond.

This is not to say that relationships at our age are something you should completely disregard. Not everyone partakes in adolsecent relationships, and they turn out just fine when they settle down in a relationship with someone later in life. However, adolescent relationships are a great time to experiment with our relationship skills, emotions, and sexuality. In other words we are more experienced in the whole relationship thing by partaking in this stuff earlier and it might make our relationships later in life be more successful.
We are highly social creatures. It was to our ancestors advantage to belong to a group. That is why those who are socially isolated tend to feel depressed. With this premise in mind I would believe that in contributing to our overall happiness in our adolescent years it would be a much wiser choice to invest in our friendships rather than the fickle romantic relationships of our age.
Although... getting consistent play from a g/f is hella nice... so I would have to say go with whatever the hell you want...

I don't have best friends, all they are good for is stabbing you in the back.

I'd pick guys or boyfriends anyday.

I wouldn't date one of my closest friends. At this age, relationships are too capricious, and I can't risk losing a best friend.

Chicks before dicks, y'all. ;)

(Or for those of the male persuasion: Bros before hoes!)

(Also, guy friends are sooo included in the "chick" part of the above statement.)

I'd say that if I had a boyfriend at my age, I wouldn't take the relationship terribly seriously. I'd be committed, yes, but chances are that it's not going to last. So I'd value my relationships with my best friends over mine with my hypothetical boyfriend.

The ideal, though, would be to have a boyfriend become a best friend. Because then I would never have to pick and choose. (:

Ewww! Boys are icky!
