BGO Talk

Has anyone else been receiving phone calls lately from their BGO? Maybe I have because mine knew I applied EA to Harvard. He called me a couple of days after I found out I was accepted and asked if I have made a decision yet. I received another call from him last night, so I finally told him I really want to wait until after CVW to make a decision. While I had him on the phone, I asked when I may receive an appointment and he said it would probably be in January. I wonder if he was asking to see if I said I was definitely going to Harvard, then maybe I wouldn't receive the appointment at all. I'm just curious. I would hope that regardless of my decision, I would still be offered an appointment because of having a nomination and an LOA.

My BGO is great. I keep her informed of everything, and I know she does her best to help me.

Your stats are so great, no wonder Navy wants you! It's your decision now. I'd think that your LOA and nomination would be enough to get you in to Annapolis.

Doug

Thanks Doug!!! Received my appointment late yesterday!

Congratulations, Navgirl! You certainly have a really tough choice ahead of you. Do you know which option you're leaning towards? Good luck with that, you're fortunate to have a lot of doors open to you.

Thanks bria*! I'm leaning towards Harvard, but now that I actually have the appointment in hand, it does make the decision even tougher. After CVW, I'm hoping it will be very clear as to which way I'll go. I'm just still a little concerned about the 24/7 lifestyle and the limited activities at the Academy. Also, having a full-ride to Harvard would be tough to pass up. But, who knows? I may decide USNA is where I belong.

As far as academics are concerned...what do you want to study? If it's engineering, deeeeefinitely go to the academy. Anything else, however, would probably be a little better at harvard.

I'm not certain yet. I was thinking of aerospace engineering, but now leaning towards poli-sci. I know that Harvard would be the better choice for that so I'll just have to give it more thought. Math and Science have always been my strong subjects and I really enjoy them, but I find politics extremely interesting and love being on the debate team. Being a poli-sci major would give me more interaction with people than engineering, at least in a very different way.

cavalier302, would you be from Charlottesville? I have a cousin there at UVA and one of my friends just found out she was accepted to the school of architecture.

Happy New Year everyone!!! I'm headed for New York in a few hours. Yes!!!

Is anyone else receiving a lot of calls from their BGO? I received another one last night before I left for work. I wasn't going to post this, BUT the calls are becoming a little annoying. I told him the last time he called that I would probably make my decision AFTER CVW and NOT before. When I politely told him that I have not changed my mind and that I'm still waiting until after the visit, he said, "Oh, I'm sorry, you did mention that. I want you to call me if you have any questions or want to discuss anything." Good grief! I don't know why he keeps calling. Maybe he truly did forget what I told him before.

Navgirl -

You only have one BGO. He has many applicants, and probably has a standard process he's working through with each.

Or they might really want you ;)

I got called by my BGO the other day. He talked for about 1/2 hour about the academy. I figured it was because I got the nrotc ISD for UNC, but he said that he didn't know about that. It's the first time I have talked to him since my interview.

Hi All...Just remember in earlier posts how many couldn't wait to hear from their B&G officers! I am sure it is part of their job to follow-up and ours has been wonderful keeping us posted on changes on status. At CVW we were told that many B&G officers call the Academy if their candidates don't get in and take it very personally! Be glad they are calling because they want you all to get in!

Heh, I haven't heard from my BGO since my interview which was last August.

Oh well, I got my noms and my triple-Q letter, just need an appointment now.

Navgirl,
Hey, give your BGO a break. He sounds like he's committed to fulfilling his duties in an honorable manner, and isn't that what the service academies are all about? It's very flattering for young people to be recruited by universities through EA or LOAs, and it conveys a sense of power that everyone craves, but often is absent from a teenager's life. Finally some positive strokes for all that hard work! You have to ask yourself if you're being entirely honest with him. After all, Harvard and USNA really are apples and oranges...

Jonez,
Same here. My daughter called her BGO in November to tell him that she had an interview scheduled with our congressman, and he told her not to call him anymore because his only function was to conduct the interview. He said that he recommended her and that was that. It's volunteer work after all. Frankly, we were aghast. Congratulations on the Feinstein nomination, very impressive. Daughter has congressional nomination and qualified letter. What's your sport?

I get almost daily emails from my BGO updating me, and checking up on stuff, or if he hasn't heard anything new for awhile, letting me know that. I think its great that he cares that much and tries to keep in touch.

Scitsailor,
That is so cool that you can share your concerns and triumphs (senatorial nominations and LOA!!!!) with your BGO! What a team! (Oh well.) You will be there in June for sure!

wstcoastmom, I agree that he has been extremely helpful and I guess I came across as sounding like a real jerk. I know that he has taken out a lot of his time to volunteer for the Academy, and for that, I am most appreciative. He has probably given me more time than a lot of BGO's would, by meeting with me a second time after the interview and all the phone calls and e-mails. I apologize for sounding off like I did. BGO's should get more credit than they do. It's a lot of work to keep up with all the candidates. I should be happy I have one that cares enough to keep calling. change of attitude :)

I'm not sure what you mean by being entirely honest with my BGO. I have told him at length that I simply cannot make a decision right now. I really think that going to CVW will be a great opportunity to get away from everyone here and see how I fit in. Contrary to popular belief, I have NOT made up my mind yet.

You may have said earlier, but what sport does your daughter play? I think scit will be crew, but she can confirm that.

Wstcoastmom,

I played football in high school. That would be cool to keep playing at Navy, but I'm not recruited. If I get in I might go with sprint football (I'll probably be less than 175 by the end of plebe summer anyway) or powerlifting. They offer a lot of good choices.

Jonez-
I believe that sprint football is only if you are 165 or less.

When I was there for CVW I heard from a youngster in 9 Company who plays sprint football that they were thinking of changing it to 175. Then I heard recently from a roomate of the mid I was with that they did decide to change it.

Either way I'm 190 now cause I've been lifting non-stop since football ended. But I figure I'll get all small during plebe summer anyway.
