BHP Interview then Rejected from McCombs?

Just found out I was waitlisted, offered PACE, and offered CAP. I’m completely crushed and confused. I applied to McCombs and BHP, and was even offered an interview for BHP (which not everyone gets), so I was completely shocked when I didn’t get into UT today. Has anyone heard of this happening before where a non-auto interviewed for BHP but then was just completely rejected from UT? I’m just so confused and heartbroken because I had my heart set on UT, and I thought I was really likely to get good news after at least getting offered a BHP interview. Sorry if this is confusing sounding, I’ve just been crying since I found out and wondered if anyone could offer some insight. Just some quick admissions stats: 32 ACT, top 12% at really big competitive in state school, took a bunch of APs, I’m the State Vice President for a very large business organization, and tons of other ECs. I also was really proud of my essays and had awesome letters of recommendation. Thanks.

That is just horrible. I’m shocked. I think you have every reason to be completely confused and upset.

Thanks, I appreciate that a lot. I’m thinking about going to the local prospective student center to see if they can offer any more insight, but I’m not sure exactly what they could tell me.

Honestly, the more I think about your situation, the more upset it makes me. If you were good enough for BHP interview, then you should have been admitted into McCombs. I would appeal the decision. Check out the UT Austin Admissions Twitter for a link to the information about the appeal process.

That was my thinking too, but I guess that just goes to show me that nothing is certain. I’m gonna do everything I can to appeal because I love UT so much, but I’ve heard they generally don’t change their decisions. I really appreciate you commenting on this post.

No I have not heard of this happening before. Usually when someone gets an interview, the get into
McCombs even if they don’t get BHP. All I have to go one is CC and our high school though. So sorry this happened to you.

Thanks! Yeah I hadn’t heard of this happening until this happened to me today. I’m gonna talk to my counselor on Monday to see if I can maybe get some answers.

There is definitely a human error associated with this. I got offered an interview with BHP in November and got accepted to McCombs days later. Not that that proves anything, but only a fraction of BHP applicants get offered an interview, and many that don’t get an interview still get McCombs, so you should definitely appeal and try to get in. Good luck!

I was admitted to McCombs as an auto-admit today… reading your post makes me feel horrible bc I have similar stats, but I feel like you have me beat with those ECs. Hope you get in via appeal, as you seem like the type of student I would love to work with over the next few years. Good luck, and best wishes.

Thank you for your kind words! I’m thinking/hoping that there was some kind of error. Either they didn’t mean to offer me an interview, or my admissions decision is wrong. It just doesn’t make sense that BHP would think my application was strong, but not McCombs. But I don’t know, this is probably just wishful thinking on my part. I’ll definitely appeal…hopefully it works out. Thanks again!

@baconwaffle You should definitely appeal and hopefully get in. If not, accept either CAP or Pace, study really hard and prove them wrong. In the meantime, study really hard this year get all As and 5s on your AP exams. Good Luck!!

Update for anyone interested/also on the waitlist: I just got offered a spot off the waitlist! Not for business, but now I get to choose from a list of liberal arts majors. I’m really excited! I didn’t receive any email about a status change–I just randomly decided to check MyStatus and saw it!

Well Done! Now, you can major in Economics and so long as you get grades, you will have the same opportunities as the Business School students.

Thank you! Unfortunately, economics wasn’t one of the majors available, but it shouldn’t be too hard to transfer into if I decide on economics. Still hoping to be able to transfer into the business school my sophomore year, but we’ll see how everything goes and if I get the grades!
