Bicycle

Does anyone use a bike to get around in college? How is that lifestyle?

completely depends on the school...
places like UC davis (flat, very spread out campus) = bike campus.
UCLA = walking campus. or bus/car to go anywhere off campus.

if your school isn't really oriented towards one or the other, then you just have to figure out how much you'll be trying to go places off campus, and whether it's easier to use a bike or a car.
if you use a bike, just make sure you get a lock and always use it! no matter what school you go to

I'm going to SMU. I think its a good bike school. I mean... there are some slopes but... hmm, i dunno.

I'm just worried people will steal my bike.

I'd like to find a college student who is using a bike rather than a car.

I used one my first two years because my courses were so spread out. But now that I am just taking courses for my major, I am in the same two buildings in close proximity. So I don't need a bike to get around anymore.

I don't, but that's because the bus system is pretty good on campus. Bikes are popular though, and as a result there's a high rate of bike theft.

Bike theft does happen. Make sure you have a quality lock and I wouldn't suggest bringing a very expensive, top-of-the-line bike or anything.

I used to do that for the first couple of weeks, then the uphill slope going from my classes back to my res is just too tiring, especially with the heavy backpack. I decided to walk from then on and it isn't too troublesome (only 10-12 minutes). Next year when I live in a different residence, it will only take 2 minutes to get to the buildings where pretty much all my classes will be in =)

yes, for me, the deciding factor would be bike-friendly campus or not bike-friendly campus.

a lot of people at USC use bikes on campus, though i have hard time understanding why sometimes...the paths can be wide, but regardless they're usually full of pedestrians. that and when the longest walk from corner-to-corner of campus as at MOST 15 minutes, it really bugs me as to why so many people (especially people who live on campus) use bikes, which can take more than a minute to lock and unlock. and on top of that, i'm a skateboarder who often zips by most bikers and more than once has crashed head-on into inattentive ones...ooooh man, nothing grinds my gears more (pun!)...

but if it makes sense to have one on your campus, it's more than makes sense ;)

yeah, bike theft is common, but good locks and common sense pretty much mean your bike won't get stolen...the funny thing, though, is that my school's DPS (campus police) "confiscates" far more improperly locked or parked bikes than other people steal bikes.
