i know for some colleges bicycles are very helpful for going around and almost essential. is this true for berkeley?

a friend of mine who visited there said don't get a bicycle unless you like riding up huge hills. berkeley is not flat at all

anyone else, is this true?

yeah I heard that too from a friend who was there for a bit. insanely steep hills.

loads of hills in berks. how about a bicycle with a motor...scooter or motorcycle perhaps? unless you love pushin uphill...

i dont mind the hills, i'm just scared of the fact that it's prolly gonna get stolen the first day i lock it up.

If I decide to get a bike, I'm getting a psycho pink one and putting as many glow-in-the-dark stickers as I can stick on it. No self-respecting thief would dare ride away with that. Plus, I can find my bike easier if I leave it in a random place.

what's the best mode of transportation then if no bikes? does everyone just walk? what about longboards or things like that?

u lazy butts, just take a walk....its good for ya.....ur not gonna have time to exercise...so might as well use your time wisely .....

biking/other methods of transportation (i mean manual) are more beneficial...plus.. they're faster... ie, more time efficient. cough

Buy a cheap bike because during your four years at Cal it WILL be stolen.

Walking is probably best. I see a few people on bikes, but it takes longer to lock them up properly than to just walk to class. You can cross campus in under 20 mins if you walk briskly. This really shouldn't be a problem unless you have back to back classes. Dorms are close, so no worries.
