Big Chance List

Ok, here's my situation (long boring post ahead, sorry in advance).

I go to a pretty competative high school. My GPA is really bad though. Unweighted its about a 2.8 and weighted its like a 3.0. I had a strong aversion to homework :(

My grades:

Freshman year (2.96 W):

English 9 Honors: 80
Spanish II: 84
World History: 87
Algebra I Honors: 78
Physical Science: 79
Gym: 95
Health: 85
Engineering: 89
Computer Skills: 86

Softmore Year (3.12 W):

English 10: 85
Biology: 84
World History Honors: 86
Geometry: 80
Spanish III: 80
Engineering II: 92
Web Page Design: 88
Gym: 95

Junior Year (forget my exact GPA):

English 10: 90
US History Honors: 89
Chemistry: 80
Psychology AP: 75
Algebra II: 74
Spanish IV: 86
Business Law: 89
Gym: 95

Senior Year I plan on straight A's term 1! (I've signed up for 1 AP, 2 honors classes)

However I did pretty well on the SAT, with a 1300 (out of 1600) and a 1900 (out of 2400).

I have good extra curriculars (peer counselor, state finalist for speech and debate team, model UN, various jobs, did LeadAmerica last summer, wrestling team, ski club, cross country team).

I'm probably going to major in international relations. I am a decent writer as well so my essay should hopefuly be decent. I will have a recommendation from my English teacher and my History Honors teacher.

Here is the big list of schools I plan on applying to:

American University
Boston University (my first choice)
UC Riverside
George Mason University (3rd choice)
George Washington University
UMD College Park
Umass Amherst
NYU
Northeastern University (second choice)
University of the Pacific
UCLA (dream school lol)
St. Johns University
Syracuse University
Temple University
Virginia Commonwealth University

Could you guys give me an evaluation if possible and my chances at these schools? I know my GPA is horrid but everything else I have seems decent. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long read.

I think you have a good shot at boston. I would say its a High Match.

Really? Thats good to know.

i assume you are male.

what state do you live in? ethnicity?

Champ --

I'm a student at BU and I actually work in the student records office, so I feel like I'm as qualified as anyone to say that I think you have a really great shot at BU -- I see application files worse than yours on a daily basis. I find that the running trend among them all is As/Bs with an occasional C or two, 600-700 SAT scores across the board, and decent, if normal, extracurricular activities.

Just make sure you have a good essay and I'd say you have as good a chance as anyone. :D

huskem55: Male, massachusetts, white

rainmanoutofsnow: Thats good to know! Thank you for the advice :).

BTW, Is the IR major competative at BU?

What do you mean by competitive? I do know that it's a huge major, because I process twice as many other IR major declaration forms as those for any other major -- BU has an OUTSTANDING IR department, from what I understand.

As far as competitive goes in the traditional student-vs-student cutthroat sort of way? I don't think you'll find that at BU. People seem to be pretty laid back here, with a spattering of a few intense kids (though none that would bump off the classmate who throws off the curve).

http://www.bu.edu/ir/ for more info. :P

You should be fine at:

George Mason
UMass
St Johns
Temple
VCU

BTW I don't have any pre-calc during HS. I know BU recommends it though. will that grealy hinder me?

Anyway, as far as competative I mean hard to get accepted into.
