"Big City" Schools with Good Academics and Good Merit

I'm talking about schools in big cities like New York City, Chicago, Miami, D.C., Boston, that give lots of merit money and are still somewhat of good prestige.

I plan on majoring in communications...if that helps any?

Harvard, Columbia…

^No merit money at Harvard OR Columbia.

Boston University, NYU, and Northeastern.

Johns Hopkins
Washington U in St. Louis
Duke (Durham isn’t major, but Duke is. lol)

AmericanU in DC often gives good merit aid :).

Oh yeah, Tulane and Fordham give great aid too.

Tulane, especially, gives great aid to just about everyone haha.

BU, Tulane, Fordham, American, U Miami, USC (especially if you’re a NMF), Northeastern

Whoa, my bad… post comprehension fail FTL

JHU will throw money at you if you’re one of the top select group of students. other than that, their aid isn’t usually too great.

i’ve also heard of George Washington giving people nice aid packages. you mentioned the city of Miami, so try The U as well

UPenn, Columbia, McGill, NYU, UCLA, USC, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Brown (but Providence is kinda eh), WashU (but Providence > St. Louis), BU/BC, Georgetown (kind of in DC), Carnegie Mellon, George Washington, UChicago, Northwestern (Chicago is very close/accessible). UPenn, Columbia, and Brown do not award merit scholarships; I’m not totally sure about the others. I have heard that NYU doesn’t give out too much money. McGill is often referred to as a “best value” school, if that helps… the tuition is not quite as high as the others I listed.

For communications, Northwestern trumps all; also, Columbia is known for its amazing graduate program in journalism, BU has a renowned school of communication, and basically any of these schools probably have enough flexibility or breadth within their English major if not in a separate “Journalism”/“Communications” major. I’m not sure that UChicago does, though.

What type of communications are you looking into? If you’re looking to be a journalist, remember that you don’t necessarily need to major in communication. Just don’t let it prevent you from looking at any schools because you can always join their paper, improve your general writing skills with English courses/writing seminars/etc., and major in something that you may be interested in reporting one day.

Same for UCLA.

As you go up the prestige scale you’re much less likely to get merit money, but you might be more likely to get need based aid.

^ yeah, but schools like Duke, etc still give out merit aid.

anyways, just about every school outside of the ivies give out forms of merit aid, though some more limited than others.

saint louis university…awesome

Cleveland - Case Western

the Ivies in REAL cities (Harvard, Columbia, and Penn) are all preeminent schools, but no Ivy League school gives merit aid. They do however give very generous financial aid on the basis of need, so it’s still worth considering.

do you need a car in new orleans, say if i were to go to tulane?

Robertson Scholarship is worth looking into. The kids you will be with are 100x greater than the average at ivies and you will be among UNC and Duke… Durham is not a huge city, but it is a good city nonetheless.

Rice

of course, at the more prestigious universities, it’ll be harder to get merit aid, as pretty much everyone would normally qualifiy for that

NYU gives some merit aid and is a great school.

Northeastern University has the best city campus by far. Columbia also
