Big difference in my ACT vs SAT scores

Here's my dilemma-- I took the SAT and ACT and my results were:

SAT = 1860 (R-650, M-670, W-540)
ACT = 33 (E-31, M-31, R-32, S-36) (W=10)

My guidance counselor is telling me to submit both SAT and ACT scores to my schools. Since my ACT score is much better, though, why would I bother to send in my less than stellar SAT scores? Wouldn't I look better if I only submitted my ACT scores? I am planning to retake the ACT to see if I could improve my score even better since the first time I took it I didn't study for it at all. Do I even bother to retake the SAT? BTW, I am looking at competitive schools like JHU, Carnegie Mellon, Penn.

If any of your schools need subject tests and do not allow score choice, your SAT results will end up being sent. I was in a similar situation, with my ACT at 35, and my SAT at 2050, but since several of my schools required to see all scores and also needed subject tests I had no choice but to submit that sat score

But for the schools that ARE score choice, should I bother to submit the SAT scores? I didn’t take any subject tests on that day, so I don’t have to. In that case, would I look like a stronger candidate if I show both SAT and ACT, or if I only submit the ACT. Or if I do that, will it look like I’m hiding my SAT scores??

You do not need to send that SAT to schools that practice score choice…end of subject

Mary,

Definitely just send your ACT scores, which are excellent. Most schools are fine with simply sending the ACT with writing score. Your writing score of 10 is also excellent (98th percentile). Sending the SAT isn’t necessary.

Don’t send the SAT scores…I’m the same way (35 ACT vs. 2040-ish on my SAT practice tests), so I’m just sending the ACT and being done with it.
