Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

wisdomesomehow - Would you please clarify? Are you saying that the School of Theatre does not allow a minor in MT while pursuing a BFA?

I went to the information day and I’m pretty sure the BFA acting which is the audition program cannot be done with the MT minor. BA drama + MT minor is what you would do if the interest is in MT. There is no BA drama audition but I think there is an audition for the minor after you are accepted to the school although I have been told not to worry a lot about that since it’s not super selective.

So when I move this college from the BFA section to BA, would you recommend I put it under audition or non-audition BA’s? I am leaning towards non-audition, with a descriptive note. Opinions?

Correct. No audition for the BA, but there is an audition for the MT minor. When I auditioned, the minor wasn’t very competitive (they let me in, and I did not have a great audition). I don’t know how competitive it is now, but I imagine they’ve been trying to make it more so.

Non-audition BA with a note sounds fine to me. Alternately, our system seems kind of similar to the one at Northwestern, and that’s listed as BA to BFA, so whichever you deem better.

Very, very, very few people can get the MT minor while doing the BFA. I’ve only heard of one, and apparently he was admitted as a BA, accepted into the minor, and then transferred into the BFA program (and this is all hearsay, so take it with a grain of saltβ€”he might not even be a musical theater minor for all I know). That is not a realistic path for most students, so don’t count on it. Many BFA students are very involved in the musical theater community at USC, they’re just not musical theater minors.

It does sound similar to Northwestern, but at NU I’d say getting in to the MT Certificate is quite competitive (ie the 15 admitted freshmen were also admitted to top BFA programs and/or nationally recognized MT performers). Is the MT minor at USC capped, and if so any idea how many audition for how many slots?

haha true, I had forgotten about the competitive factor. Based on what you’re telling me about Northwestern’s program, USC’s is easier to get into as far as I know.

I like to say that we’re self-selecting, since most of the people studying acting at USC want to go into film and TV, so the musical theater minor is more of a self-selection thing than a de facto this-is-what-you-should-want-to-do-if-you’re-at-USC thing. While musical theater is not necessarily what we’re known for, that doesn’t mean that we have a bad program.

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BAΒ’s/BMΒ’s, Non-Audition BFAΒ’s, Audition BAΒ’s/BMΒ’s, Audition BFAΒ’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research Β– there are many BA programs that act like BFAΒ’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum, read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match.

Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening DVD to be invited to audition.

Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. LetΒ’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.

For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps!

Bumping to help the newcomers.

UMiami is no longer offering this degree to incoming students. They only offer a BFA in musical theater. I inquired for my D.

My D and I visited Dean College in MA last week. They also offer a BA in Theatre. According to their website, students must submit an audition DVD or electronic upload. However, the admissions person we met with told us they will be requiring in-person auditions for the coming year.

Thanks debsterc and 3daughters, next time I repost the list these changes will be included.

As far as I can tell, Dean College is on the list correctly: 2 year AA in Theatre with an MT concentration. The BA in Theatre at Dean is not a specific MT degree or MT concentration.

William Peace University (formally Peace College) is now audition for BFA. I’m not completely sure of BA program, whether it is audition or non-audition. They are also now co-ed, rather than all women.

This is one of those programs most have heard nothing about because it is new. Although we have lived in NC for the past 12 years, we had never heard of WPU until my daughter attended NCTC. She never would have considered it, based on the reviews of the college, but she researched the faculty, got to know some of the students in the department, and observed not only a finished production, but the audition skills of several students she happened to see at an audition here in the Charlotte area. So far, she has no regrets about her decision!

They will be at NCTC again in October, and I know they have several audition dates scheduled. (I will post those dates in the appropriate thread.)

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs.
Last I heard, from an Admissions Officer at the Colleges that Change Lives college fair, Southwestern in Georgetown TX (just outside of Austin) is no longer offering a BFA in Musical Theater. She said the BFA was discontinued due to β€œlack of interest.” Seems odd to me in this day and age when MT is just exploding…Anyone know more?

They list a BFA in Theater and a minor in dance…they say they do musical productions and have an upper level class in MT. I am going to need to find out if that really means a degree in MT or not, or at least a real MT track no matter what it’s called. One person from the school said they definitely have degree in MT, but it’s now a BA. Another person at the school just told me they don’t have a degree in MT, and that seems kind of confirmed by the website. Anyone know the real story? Also, the website says the auditions are for admission AND scholarships, but I called the school and they said the auditions are just for scholarships. I find this rather confusing. I think it’s clearer at other schools–for example, when MT is listed as a major & when a school says clearly, β€œAn audition is/is not required for admission to the MT program”

Thanks for the update. Next time I post the list, I will take Southwestern off the list. This thread is just for updates, so if you want to ask questions about their program you may want to try in another thread.

Thanks. My questions run more to How should Southwestern appear on the MT List, if at all? BFA or BA? Audition or not? Seems like the program is in a state of transition. One thing we are looking at for safeties is non-audition BFA programs. The sub-list of those is kind of short to begin with, and I just haven’t heard of many on the already short list. I have heard of Southwestern–just trying to pin down its truthful spot on your list…

If a school’s degree is not in MT, I think it should not be on the list. I would guess there are several schools that would allow training in 2 or 3 of the main MT training areas by combining a degree in Acting or Vocal Performance with a minor in Dance, but if the program is not designed to do that, it is not a true MT program.

^^ there is a big list of a schools there but they’re MT only. You might find it helpful because all of the program websites are linked though!
