"Big Names"

Hello, just another senior posting a question/reflection about the “Ivy Leagues”.

It’s pretty clear that Ivy League or bust is a flawed rationale and thinking - and people are commonly talking about how “I got a quality education that’s Ivy League level at a less selective college, X”.

Cool, understandable. But I’ve been thinking quite a bit, and I was wondering not about the “quality” of education (because I know the quality of education really depends on what the student makes of it, honestly), but rather the post-undergraduate resources and connections that the Ivy Leagues provide.

My Thoughts/Questions:

  1. An Ivy League name is a buzz word from companies scouting for recruits (and in the labor industry in general).
  2. Are the Ivy Leagues prevalent with wealthy students from wealthy families (Of course I know there are many low-income students in the Ivy Leagues)? And are these families what form the “connections” that may help an individual cast a wider net for jobs, investment, research, and etc?
  3. How, REALLY, do the above benefits of the Ivy League “connections” start to become more and more noticeable as you go “down” in rankings (I don’t want to give off the typical rank addicted student…I’m not one hopefully).

I don’t know if my post made any sense, considering I’m writing this at around 1 in the morning, but I’d like to know your thoughts as well, especially #2 and #3, because as a low (no) income immigrant student, a lot of the decisions I make today, quite frankly, seem to attribute one way or another to economic elevation and breaking free from poverty (sounds more dramatic than it should). Thanks for reaching CC
