Is is worth it to bring a bike to Wellesley?

I was wondering about bicycles as well. On the Wellesley website is a reference to communal bikes:
“There are plenty of bicycles on campus, but look around and you’ll notice a few more neon pink bikes than you’d normally expect. “Revolution Bikes,” a program sponsored by the Outing Club, brings a communal bike pool to campus.”
Are they commonly available? Or, are the scarce? My daughter rides her bicycle constantly, but I wanted to see about this shared resource. Advise?

The Revolution Bikes program sort of fizzled out. I think we had 4 or 5 two years ago, but lately I’ve only seen 1.

Is it worth having a bike on campus? I had one, but it wouldn’t have been the end of the world if I didn’t. Some thoughts:

-I never found it worth biking to class.
-It can be nice to bike to a destination in the ville.
-There can be a lot of “bad weather” days at Wellesley.
-I will say that the exposure to the elements and salt air, has been tough on my bike.
-Bikes need to be stored over the summer.
-I’ve never heard of a student having her bike stolen on campus. However, if students don’t lock their bikes, then there is a risk of someone borrowing the bike, and then the owner has to track the bike down.
-There is (has been?) a guy who sold used bikes on campus.

Thanks, college_rule…I think I will let her complete a semester before she decides on shipping a bike across country…

Thanks for the scoop C_R - DD was thinking of buying a used bike locally just to get around campus, but I think she will hold off at least until spring.

I asked my D - she said that there are lots of opportunities to purchase a used bike once there. She agreed that the “lend a bike” program kind of fizzled out - there are still bikes around, but they aren’t in the best condition most of the time.
