Bike Rental

“literally 5 million”

lol

I don’t think it is really necessary to get around campus on a bike, walking is probably sufficient to get anywhere on campus on time. The sidewalks are crowded with walkers, and I never liked riding a bike in traffic with cars and trucks because of fear of getting hit by vehicles even though I have a legal right to share road on a bike. If you need to go a few miles off campus, ride a bus or get a car ride from a friend. I sure wouldn’t bring a bike worth over $50 if it is left outside, can’t bring bike in dorm room–takes up too much space in room.

I was wrong about not needing a bike on campus; I just got one and I am glad I have it. I have to get from Dodd Hall on eastside of campus to Psychology Bldg. on westside in fifteen minute break between two classes. I couldn’t walk/jog (with bookbag on back) to second class without being late no matter how hard I tried. I can now, using the bike; it’s helped out tremendously. I’m not going off campus on busy streets with it though.

Even if you are careful a bike may still be stolen. My son left his bike locked up outside of Wildwood for the weekend and it was gone Monday morning (this was less than two weeks ago.) It was a decent quality bike, but not new or particularly attractive. Nevertheless, I would recommend if you have a bike on campus that it not be one that is valuable – if you have a cheap second-hand bike stolen, it won’t be quite as painful.

I didn’t have much choice about getting bike, I needed it to get to my class ontime, it’s not a luxury item. Failing the course would be worse than the risk of having the bike stolen. I got the bike for $60 at the Wal-Mart on clearance. I got a U-lock for $15 and a steel cable in the hardware dept for $5 that I loop thru the front wheel with the U-lock, it’s not 100% theft-proof but it should help. So I’ve got $80 tied up in the bike which is less than what some of my used paperback textbooks cost. If someone tries to steal my bike I hope they get a hernia doing it.
