Bike Rental

Does anyone know how this works? Do we actually get to keep the bike for the entire semester or do we have to return it each day at a certain time?

The cheap prices listed on the BB poll (the max was $25) are what make me ask this.

I didn’t even know this was an option, could you post a link or something?

what happens if it gets stolen or damaged? cuz that happens a lot here…

I don’t know much about this either. Is there a new private company? I know student government purchased 30 bike for a trial system, but I do not know what the status of that is. I am guessing that the use of a bike for an entire semester would be more than $25.

Campuses that have the yellow bike programs have many loud, ugly, “you would not want to steal this bike” type bikes that you can just take one, ride it where you need to go and then leave it there on arrival. But theft is a big problem. In Europe, they have cards you purchase and swipe a card to take a bike, then it locks in upon return, and they can track you took a bike and did not return it. But there is quite a bit of expense setting it up.

It shows up on the poll when you first log into blackboard, and it says it is sponsored by the SGA.

I see it now. And what a great deal for a semester. I think SG has money/bikes for a pilot program and the poll is part of getting it started up.

Certainly sounds like a great deal, but as Tina mentioned, you always see bikes with seats, wheels, and other parts stolen. I would never leave my bike anywhere on campus over night.

Great…so I’m bringing my own bike, guess I’ll have to keep it in my dorm when I’m not using it? :P

Maybe someone with more experience in keeping their bike on campus can weigh in on where to keep it. I’m sure there are safer areas than others on campus for it. I just know I’ve seen bikes with parts taken off.

Last summer my son’s new bike was stolen from the racks in front of Ragans the second night. A few days later I was speaking with FSUPD and they said to use one of those solid U bolt locks that can’t be cut with bolt cutters. Stupid us, never even thought about someone cutting the lock off!

torioreo - his first year he was in a triple in Landis. There was not any extra room in the dorm room to keep a bike. My son is home for a few weeks—I just asked him and he said to make sure you remove the seat if you leave it in the racks out front of your dorm. Like Matt125 said, there are those that steal parts off the bikes.

It’s not even just getting your bike stolen, if it’s locked up and they can’t get it they will steal your seat, slash your tires, etc. you see so many bike frames locked up with no wheels, handle bars, chain, seat…anything…anything that can be taken off is.

^
For the most part those are the bikes that are left for weeks on end -when you walk the same route to class every day the bikes that never move are really obvious. Don’t store your bike outside the parking garage next to the Diner or in random areas desolate areas between class buildings for more than a few days at a time. The inner dorms didn’t seem to have issues.

I brought my bike my first year and used it nearly every day during the week as I had cross-campus classes back to back. I used a lock that I ran through the tires, I had a u-bar but I didn’t like to use it. I also had my bike registered with the FSU pd hoping the sticker would be a deterrent. From the looks of it the bikes in front of Gilchrist (my dorm) and Landis were never messed with. My bike was never tampered with and I don’t know anyone over the past two years that has. My bell fell off once but the person was nice enough to put it in my bag with a note.

The second semester I was able to walk to class and didn’t use my bike. I left it at the union (pretty open and public, and I didn’t want it getting knocked over in the crowded Gilchrist racks.) It gathered leaves but still was never tampered with.

It’s pretty rare for someone to store their bike inside their room… but leaving it unattended for weeks is just asking for trouble. If you have enough time between classes I wouldn’t bother bringing it, if it’s far the buses are really nice (and don’t be afraid to learn them, it sometimes takes up to year for people to finally try them from the fear of missing their stop/looking stupid/ ect.)

From having to pay for two bikes my son had stolen in NYC. If you have no room in your dorm use a good log chain wrap with a old tube maybe two at 4’ each and 2 boat locks…hard to cut. We used the cables, bar…and still bikes were stolen. Other recommendation is to pop front tire off and seat and keep that in dorm room. overnite…and if its a very nice bike/expensive then make it look cheaper than the bikes around yours. Ducktape / ugly color works. But always check your bike everyday…cause if you don’t it will disappear.

I have fifteen minutes to get from Carothers to the Conradi building.
I’ve never really walked the campus much, so I don’t know if it’s possible to walk there in under fifteen minutes, or if I’d have to buy a bike or take the bus.
Can someone please tell me if it’s walk-able in under fifteen minutes?
(I know it’s pretty irrelevant to the topic, but I figured since you’re all already talking about bikes…)

Alrighty…I will probably get some black spray paint or something and spray the heck out of my bike! I’ll try and get a decent lock, too…I’ll see how big our triple is and decide from there if there’s enough room for it! I wish they had a place indoors to store student bikes! =[

I wanted to bring my bike too…but I want to leave with it!

Maybe we can find out about having a room for bikes in each residence hall for overnight storage. Does anyone know if it would be a possibility?

I’m pretty sure the safest place to store your bike is directly in front of Landis, considering its in light and in the face of Landis Green.

That’s my dorm, but do you think that bikes would be safe outside overnight?

Carothers to Conradi wouldn’t be a problem walking. Counting on a bike to go, say, Carothers to Diffenbaugh however is something I wouldn’t do. Locking your bike takes time. Professors can run over a couple minutes or you may want to stay after to ask a question. You’ll also have to avoid high traffic walkways, especially the middle of the day. You’ll probably have some poor bystander step out in front of you at least once- or it’ll be one of diabolical FSU squirrels. Riding uphill when it’s super hot or raining sucks when you you’re on crunched time.

Your roommates likely wont appreciate you bringing in a dirty bike at the end of each day. Nearly everyone leaves their bikes outside. I never see the bikes in front of Landis get messed with.

Nolette, parkin it outside o’ landis shouldnt give you any problems. There’s literally 5 million bikes in front of landis, considering its a major walkway for the dorms around the east side (deviney, broward, gilchrist), no one is really stupid enough to steal a bike from there (or atleast i hope so).

Oh and yah, mid day biking is probably the scariest. Some people aren’t the most “experienced” bikers per say, and sometimes human vs bike collisions are a spectacle. Not too long ago around the Gilchrist roundabout, some guy legitimately crashed directly into a girl standing by the sidewalk.
