Hi Aggies,

I’m planning to get a bike for daily use in Davis. But one of my friend told me people’s bikes got stolen sometimes.

Do you have any idea how frequent that happens?
Or is there any specific place/location/time that stealing bike happens with a greater chance?

Thanks for your feedback.

I’ve ridden my bike a lot during my two year here and I’ve never had my bike stolen. Though I’ve had a couple friends who have. I think it highly depends on locking your bike properly and just thinking smart when locking.

Use a good U-lock (plus cord if you are really paranoid). I’ve been using the kryptonite 2-series one and it’s been pretty sturdy. Try to lock not just your frame but your wheels as well especially if your front wheel is a quick release. I personally use the U-lock and go through front wheel and the frame. Lock your bike in a smart area. Lock to an object that is grounded and not just locking to the bike itself. Lock in an area with other bikes (you can even park to a nicer looking bike). Don’t lock to a place for long periods of time (put it in your dorm/apt). Check to see if that you’ve actually locked your bike.

Sometimes, its hard to completely evade your bike getting stolen especially when the thief has the right tools. But hopefully you lock smart and you won’t have to experience it. (: Also, getting a non attracting bike could also be helpful, just to deter thiefs even further.
