Locking a bike

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to locking bikes. I'm from an area where you can just leave a bike on your front yard and it'll still be there in the morning. I've never had to use a lock until now. My brother has lent me his Kryptonite cable lock with a key. Is that enough to keep it safe? Or should I get a U lock and use both as my locks...? I don't want to get my bike stolen within the first week on campus because that would suck.

Also, can I keep my bike inside my dorm (rooming in the village)?

You can leave your bike inside your place (as far as I know, not sure of all the village rules), I mean, if your roommate(s) are cool with it.

YOU NEED A BIKE LOCK. I tell everyone that asks about it because bikes get stolen SO easy!! Happened to me freshman year. I have a cable lock and it works well for me, but campus police officers recommend the U locks.
