Bike Shops in San Diego

I plan to purchase a bike once i get to UCSD. I was just wondering which bike shop would have the best prices. I plan on getting a used hybrid. But am having trouble deciding where to go to buy it.

Thanks!

i would honestly go with craigslist/ebay … not to put down any of the existing bike shops, but there are much better deals to be found when you go to the buyer yourself.

I’m wondering bout the same thing.

UCSD bike shop sucks. UC Cyclery sucks. Mybikecommute.net is my favorite, but not especially great (particularly if you’re buying a bike). I’d look on craigslist.

Some of the guys on the cycling/tri team work at the UCSD Bike Shop but they usually have quite a long wait list in terms of service. Only reason I get stuff there is because I get a 30% discount for being on the team. That being said, they have decent bikes for decent prices even if you don’t get a discount.

Best shop in the area imo is B&L Bike and Sports in Solana Beach. UC Cyclery isn’t the best but the wrenches there are good people who know their stuff. I think they carry Specialized stuff and they make a pretty good hybrid (Sirius, I think).

Finding a decent bike on Craigslist takes a lot of patience and is kinda shady sometimes, so make sure you bring a friend a long when you buy. Especially true if the price is decently high.

^ if you see bal around, give him a thanks from me for shipping a cycling kit all the way out to NYC. i’m considering joining the team here, but in the meantime i’d rather sport the logo of my alma mater :)

bicycle warehouse in PB

For your sake, I hope you got the jersey/bibs from the year before last. The new white/light blue ones aren’t bad, but the grey/blue ones 2007-2008 were way better.

Ruined my nice kit in a road race crash. And I was trying to protect them by not wearing them in crits too. :(

do we have to wear helmets?

Not if you’re riding around campus but if you’re going to venture off-campus, I would wear one because the speed limits around the school are pretty high. Better safe than sorry.

Helmets save lives, people.

yeah but my mom tells me i have a hard head so i dont need one

^^^lmao rofl lol!

[The Market Place - SoCalTrailRiders](http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/market-place/)

That’s where I found my bike.

I’m not a huge fan of the blue/white kit since, uh, white doesn’t exactly hide much and rain-soaked white hides even less. Oh well.

Tomorrow’s the NYC century – lengths of 15 to 100 miles through New York City. I’m doing 75 and stoked, the weather’s going to be perfect! For being such an urban city, NYC actually has a wealth of cycling opportunities. And I’ve heard the ECCC is pretty vicious compared to the other groups. Silly East Coasters.

Pacific Beach has someee nice shops ;]

how about Walmart?

Forget Walmart. Target actually has much better value if you’re looking for a hardtail or full suspension bike. I think the brand they have there is Iron something.

"Helmets save lives, people. "

+1
Everyone that has ridden awhile has either personally been saved by a helmet (me), or knows someone saved. There are also tragic no-helmet stories too.

These are not high speed accidents either. The ones I know about are low speed, routine riding mostly having to do with poles and trees.

I always get my bikes at Target. :D
