Bike stealing?

So my parents bought me a really nice bike and I'm afraid even if I lock it, it won't prevent anyone from stealing it. Does bike stealing happen on campus a lot? I've heard people having their bikes stolen even if they've locked it. What do you guys recommend?

Yes, bike theft happens a lot on college campuses everywhere. Do a little searching on the web and YouTube and you’ll find a lot of good tips for locking a bike securely. However, I don’t think it is wise to have a truly nice bike for daily commuting. I used a bike that fit me really well, and functioned really well … but looked like a piece of junk. Then I kept it locked up pretty securely but didn’t spend a fortune on locks or carrying around tons of extra weight.

This video shows the standard method of locking a bike up fairly securely:
<a href=“Bike Revolution - How to lock your bike so it doesn't get stolen - YouTube”>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9bAv1ujPXs

I now have the luxury of keeping my bike in the garage at home, and in my office at work, so I can finally have a commuter that actually looks like a decent bike.

don’t bring a really nice bike to school, IMHO. For one thing it sits out in the rain which isn’t great for it. And you’re almost asking for someone to look at it, think “spoiled rich kid”, and help themselves to it. The campus is absolutely flat, so all you need is a junker that rolls. My 2 cents…

Thank you Sedluhs!!! That was very informational :D

… So my UCSB friend had her bike seat stolen…
Is it possible we’re screwed either way? x]

And I’m probably going to buy a lot of WD-40.

BIKE SEAT?! omg wow people really are desperate. I’m probably going yo buy the cheapest ugliest bike. And a U lock of course ;)

In any one year, there’s a 2-3% chance of getting your bike stolen; recovery rates of stolen bikes are about 30% if you register the bike with the CSOs.

This is why Ill most likely bring a scooter and carry it around with me. Plus, bikes are expensive  along with U locks ahha

Fail-safe rules you should follow (from the top of my head):

When locking your bike, DON’T lock your bike to itself–LOCK THE DAMN BICYCLE TO A STATIONARY “LANDMARK” (e.g. lampost, tree, fence, etc.)

Don’t think thieves will be discouraged by a locked bike? THEY CAN CARRY THEM, NO THOUGHTS GIVEN!

Bike seats are usually stolen only if the seatposts are secured to the frame via a lever, not by screws.

Why would they want to steal bike seats? Most probably, to ■■■■■.

And yea. Gotta go buy yogurt right now. . .

And regarding scooters–nobody gives a damn if you ride a scooter. Scoot away!

Omg i love you hairy lemon. I’m gonna scooter my nuts off and nobody can say a darn tootin thing bout it
