Okay, this may be a bit random, but does anyone know if bikes are stolen frequently on campus? I have seen a lot of people complaining elsewhere about bikes being stolen, locks being cut, and even dps taking bikes, so any feedback from students is appreciated. Also, are students allowed to take their bicycles up to their dorms?
I may not have the most expensive bike around, but I did work hard to restore it, and ended up putting about a $300 investment into it, so I don't want to bring it to campus if there is a high possibility that someone will walk off with it. Especially if I am paying the money to ship it cross-country.

Bikes get stolen pretty often, but hunters prey on the weak–if you ALWAYS lock it with a good lock (I would recommend a motorcycle lock), to the frame, you should be okay. Bikes are much less likely to be stolen on campus, although it happens. You could bring the bike up to your dorm but your roommate will hate you; that takes up a LOT of space in a dorm room.

All things considered I would not bring a $300 bike that you really care about to USC until you have an apartment and you can bring it inside. Buy a $75-100 beach cruiser or used bike for your freshman year.

I’d recommend getting student dorm insurance no matter what university, just in case. Very quick service and with small deductible, you will be able to replace your bike. You will have peace of mind, it covers laptops, and all your other stuff, and is inexpensive to buy. If any item you own is too precious to replace, don’t bring it.

Nearly every bike I see on campus is not locked as securely as it should be. This is probably the #1 reason for bikes being stolen. I even see cases of people simply parking their bike with no lock.

To ensure not getting your bike stolen, get two solid U-Locks (kryptonite brand is good). Lock one around your front tire and the frame right behind it like so: http://farm3.static.■■■■■■■■■■/2501/3890037034_f1d8e996c1.jpg

Then lock the rear one around both your back tire, the bike frame, and the bike rack. This way they can’t steal just the tire or steal the rest of the bike with the front tire still locked to the rack which I see all the time. That must suck to come back to just your tire locked to the bike rack?
