Hey everyone! I will be starting at Yale in the fall (couple weeks now I guess) and have a quick question about bike storage. I'm a triathlete so will be bringing my road bike with me to campus, and was wondering about options for storing it- I'm not crazy about the idea of leaving it locked outside all the time, so I'm just curious. I've emailed a couple people on campus and gotten no response (summer, so not too surprising) so was wondering if anyone here knows anything about this! Thank you!

I’ve seen bikes kept in the common room of the suite–this depends on whether your roommates will tolerate that, of course.

^^ Yale discourages keeping bikes in the common rooms, but they do provide outside bike racks and basement storage for bikes at most colleges.

Is there basement storage for bikes on the Old Campus? I’m not sure about that, although there are definitely outdoor bike racks.

Thanks everyone for the input! I’m a transfer so I will be living in my college, not on Old Campus, I just don’t know which college I’m in yet. I’m not crazy about the thought of leaving it locked outside (it’s a road bike for competition, so not exactly the cheapest, and I’ve had a bike stolen before) so I guess I’ll hope I’m assigned to a college with basement storage! I wasn’t sure how common that was. So thanks everyone again!

at least in my kid’s college (TD) the basement area seems huge. Given your particular need, I’d find it hard to believe the Master wouldn’t allow you to use a corner to store your bike. Good luck! (And my DD lived off campus last summer and was using my bike for the summer; it was stolen from the back yard. So I get your concern!)

You can’t count on having designated inside storage. That being said you might be able to make something work as the above posters mentioned. Otherwise, you should know that your bike will be pretty safe locked outside in your college courtyard. You need a Yale ID to get into the college and at night there is plenty of security around. With a good U Lock I really doubt anyone would be able to get inside and break the lock without drawing attention. This is what I did all last year, and while my road bike is decent but not super nice, it never seemed to be in danger of theft.
