Bikes at Yale

Could anyone tell me what they think about keeping a bike at Yale (maybe make those trips up science hill a little easier 8o) ) Are there racks readily available to keep them? What about storage in the winter? I wouldn't want to leave one out in the snow and watch it rust over. Thanks a lot!

Lots of racks available and indoor storage available at your residential college (you can store it there over the summer, too). A fair number of people bring bikes. Just don't bring an expensive one, though.

There are a LOT of bike thefts, so get the best lock!

They let New Haven citizens in the campus?

It's an open campus for classroom buildings, so anyone could walk anywhere.
Bike racks are outside of buildings, hence ...

wow the question the OP asked is exactly the one i was gonna ask...so is there indoor storage in the freshman dorms as well? (since most freshmen dont live in their residential college)...

most freshman do live in their residential college... around 90% i've read from the Web site.

i thought freshmen had freshmen housing on old campus...for instance, i'm in JE but i live in farnam my freshman year...

oh..
well. i attended a yale seminar and they said most people live in residential colleges. in fact, that is a key selling point and is one of my reasons to attend yale among the other Ivies.

nah, freshmen DO live on old campus their frosh year, then move off to residential college. For instance, a Saybrugian spends his or her first year in Layman-Wright. or, Ldub.

umm it seems, bingowasmynamo, that most of the info you have is from information sessions or websites. on the other hand, this year, i will be living in freshman housing that is different from the residential colleges. in fact, most freshmen (with the exception of silliam and TD) live on old campus, which is removed from the residential colleges...they only move in to the res colleges their sophomore year. it's a great system, nonetheless, bc the freshmen get to interact w/ other freshmen that are not in their res college and it brings them together as a class. but i am still wondering if anybody can answer my question about bike storage (partic. indoor storage) on old campus...

About 90% of undergraduates live in college housing.

Back to the original topic - do NOT bring or buy an expensive bike - too much of a temptation. They DO get stolen - even heard of at least one incident where one was stolen from within a residental college. The best advice we heard was from one of the tour guides who said paint your bike some outrageous color so everyone knows it's yours and no one wants to steal it. By the way - most students get along fine wthout one.

The indoor storage is at the residential college itself. For example, if you're in JE, you'll live in Farnam your freshman year, but can still store your bike at JE itself. My son was the only one of 5 in his suite to have a bike, but the others borrowed it all the time.

My D, a rising senior, has been baffled from Day One why anyone would bring a bike to Yale. The campus is EXTREMELY compact and you can walk from one end to the other in less than 20 minutes. Furthermore, it is laced with rather busy streets that don't have dedicated bike paths, so she (and I) consider biking a hazardous activity there.

verteran mom - highly agree - Don't know exact numbers but my very unscientific guess would be that less than 10% of the student population bothers with bikes. They are handy to explore off-campus sites but hardly a necessity for navigating the campus. Personally. they appear to be more trouble than they are worth. Shuttle service is available for longer walks and inclimate weather. and you're correct - the campus can be traversed in 20 minutes or less.

It's a much longer trek to Yale Medical School where many kids do research & lab work there.
The shuttle service is hit or miss: it can be either a very long wait or
you get lucky now & then.

Is there anything like a used bike store near campus where you can buy one pretty cheap?
