bikes on campus?

My dad said that he would buy me a bike for college, but I don't know how useful it would be on campus. Do a lot of people ride bikes to wherever they need to go or is this a waste of money? Are there a lotta bike racks outside of buildings to lock up?

I saw a few people riding bikes at Duke when I spent 4 days there. I saw some racks where you can lock it.

i invested in a good bike (i.e. expensive and lightweight for going up and down 3 flights of stairs) and i keep it in my room (my closet is huge)....i use it for long rides out the the duke forest, really fast runs to bank of america/northgate, or to 9th st. i also like riding it over to the gardens for studying on the weekends. also, later at night, it's fun to ride back from west - it's faster than taking a central bus after 8. There are quite a few racks around, but you have to look for covered ones. as for west, it's not bike friendly (stairs), but you just have to take routes that are a bit longer - not too bad. there are enough racks around to stow it and not worry.

but i'm definitely in the minority, having a bike.
