Biking around NYU

I'm a new student to NYU, living in Brittany Hall this year.

I was wondering if it's viable to bike around NYU for transportation? I would be using it for:

1) Getting to class
2) Missing the bus
3) Going to residence halls with dining commons so that I can have food to eat.
4) Getting around in general.

Are there bike racks/places to safely store bikes at Brittany Hall (or the surrounding area)? Worth it at all?

Thanks for any info!

Did you look at the events for Welcome Week yet? There’s an event called “bike safety” where you can learn about safe biking in the city (trust me, it can be VERY dangerous) and then NYU has a thing where you can rent a bike from 12 different locations.

A bike from Brittany? It’s close enough that you can walk anywhere conveniently. No one in Brittany that I knew even considered biking. You’re a 5-10 minute walk away from virtually all major NYU buildings and dining halls. A bike’ll quickly become more of a burden. If you need it in some emergency situation, check out the NYU bike share.

Which floor on Brittany will you be living on? I’ll be dorming there too!

The previous poster is right. Brittany is so close to all the NYU buildings that it’s probably just as quick to walk to most NYU locations.

Brittany does have bike racks in one of the first floor lounges, which I believe you can use. I wouldn’t recommend locking your bike outside overnight, as I’ve personally had a thief cut a steel u-lock in less than an hour outside of a friend’s dorm.

However, bicycling is a great way to get around the city. There’s a bike lane on 10th street that you can take to the Hudson Greenway Trail, which runs almost the entire length of Manhattan. Since it’s along the river, you don’t have to deal with cars or anything other than joggers.

@surish - Hi! I am living on the 9th floor, how about you? I have yet to visit Brittany

@kz321321: I’m on the 11th floor I think. I’ll need to double check before move-in day lol. I haven’t visited it either but it is going to be rough not having A/C :(.

@surish - sweet! maybe i’ll see you on move-in day! i’m living in a triple in a suite (I think that’s how it’s set up, not 100% sure).

And on not having A/C…I recently went to China, so I think any amount of heat won’t really phase me much anymore. Plus, a fan for the room will probably solve it!
