Biking at AU

At American, do students have discounts on bikeshare in the city? How often do most students bike in DC - would it be smart to bring a bike?

I can’t answer re: bikeshare and how current students use bikes. However, my experience at AU 20+ years ago says it can be helpful to have a bike. I had an off-campus job about 2 miles away. Biking was much quicker than the subway or the bus. But you do not need a bike to get around campus–it’s not that big.

Thank you! Yeah, I wouldn’t need a bike on campus, just to get around DC

While people bike, it is not a large amount of people. DC is a large city and we are pretty far away (roughly 4 miles away from the White House) from the main part of the city. With the free shuttles and metro passes, most people just metro to those areas.

If you want to bikeshare, there is the Capital Bikeshare that cost $85 a year for unlimited rides that are free under 30 minutes, 1.50 for 30-59 minutes, 3 dollars for 60-89 minutes and 6 dollars per every 30 mins after 90 mins. Honestly, it’s not that a great of a deal and I’d suggest against it.

tldr: don’t bring your bike. most people don’t use them.

If you are dying for it after Christmas break, you can bring it then. But honestly I cannot tell you the name of one person that uses their bike here. It’s not a big campus and the metro opens doors that may not have been opened 20 years or however long ago.
