Bicycle, transport necessary?

For Hoyas who've spent time at Gtown, did you need to use a bike to get around campus? Also:
- Is having one convenient to get around DC?
- Does one need to worry about theft or security on campus?
- What about having a car? Is it fairly easy to get a license, and is it common / necessary to have a car while living on campus?

Thanks!!

Yea, and one more question. I'm lookin to start a cycling club, with hopes of someday makin it an intercollegiate racing team, but have a very expensive road bike($1000+) that i have invested alot of my hard-earned cash in and would like to lock it up indoors. Is there any place on campus where this would be possible?

Gtown's campus is pretty small, especially by collegiate standards, so you don't need a bike to get around.

Theft isn't too big of an issue typically, at least not moreso than at an average university. As for security and crime in general...well, the campus itself is very safe. There's been a few dorm break-ins but they instituted new (and utterly annoying and unnecessary imo) security measures to combat that.

Besides that, I have an e-mail mailbox full of Public Safety Alerts about students getting robbed or harrassed while off-campus, though still fairly close by. Most of them take place from 2 am onward, but there's always exceptions, like that time some random guy shot into a Village B appartment after getting kicked out of a party there.

DOPS is pretty incompetent, but as long as you travel in a group during late night/early mornings off campus, you shouldn't have any problems.

You really don't need a car in DC, and especially not Georgetown. It can be convenient for a few tasks, like doing mass grocery shopping, keg transportation, road trips, etc. but it's probably not gonna be something you're going to use on a daily basis. In any case, you can't keep a car on campus in most circumstances, so the point is moot. Most people with cars either have driveways in the townhouses they rent or they pay for an off-campus parking spot.

As for storing a bike inside, I know of at least one guy who kept his in his room. Beyond that, there's no indoor bike racks or anything like that that I know of.

how did the guy keep his bike in his room? oh and anyone else have any bike advice?

any more advice?

Yes, I have been wondering about bicycles myself. I would love to bring mine with me, but I am nervous about it being stolen & getting it to Georgetown in the first place.

1) Has anyone transported [successfully] their bicycle from another state in the Midwest/West Coast?

2) Is it safe to lock the bicycle up around town?
