Bill's due date?

Does anyone know when is the due date to pay for the fall semester. I understand that it may depend on the school, but in general... I am just trying to see when do I need to have the money ready.

Thanks.

Bob.

Generally, a little before the orientation.

Ours was the first day of classes.

Call the registrar asap. The cash flow issues are too important to leave to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

We found some institutions very flexible (i.e. waived late fees, removed extraneous charges from our bill) when we spoke to them early in the summer about our cash flow constraints. We found others not flexible at all (the due date is the due date; late fees plus interest accrue on day 2 with no exceptions). You won’t find out which category your college falls into until you schedule a phone conversation with someone from the bursar’s office.

We also found that colleges were quite willing to have an open and candid conversation BEFORE the deadlines. They were less so after the fact. So get on the phone.

We also discovered that they loved auto-pay. Who knew? We negotiated an unpublished discount for registering for an automatic withdrawal upfront. We know people who ended up fed-exing a check on the due date to avoid a penalty-- much nicer to get a discount for an automatic withdrawal (which is free from our bank- ymmv.)

Some have very good payment plans, often explained on the registrar web page. Ours for example is split over 6 payments.

Our D1’s school offers payment plans - 12, 10 or 6 payments. For 10 payment plan you need to do it by June.

And be sure the school has YOUR email in addition to your child’s. My friend’s son got busy and forgot to check email for 2-3 weeks. During this period some fees were due for the next semester and when my friend finally found out she had to pay some late penalties!

Absolutely call the school or look on their web site. Just to give you an idea of how different things can be: DS who is a college senior’s tuition payments were due in 2 installments at least 1/2 before the start of school and the other half for fall semester wasn’t due until OCTOBER! On top of that all the financial aid and scholarships were applied first so I never had to make the first payment.

Just checked the website for DD’s new school and the entire fall semester is due early in August.

I pay in August and December. And then in February they ask for $1000 housing deposit for the next year!

It will vary enormously from school to school. At my daughter’s school they bill everything to the Bursars account at the beginning of the semester but payment is not actually due until the middle of the following month. Same with any additional charges during the year - they are billed to the account and die the 15th of the subsequent month. There is also an option to pay it over several months I think.

But at my friends daughter’s school they had to make the first payment in the June before the semester started. I think they also had some sort of option to make the semester’s payments in 3 installments.

You definitely need to ask your school. I remember that D’s college would send fall semester bills out by mid-July with payment due Aug 1 for a semester that started in late September.
