Binghamton vs Buffalo vs Albany

I've been accepted into all three schools and have been accepted into the Honors Colleges at both Albany and Buffalo. All three, from what I can tell, offer excellent opportunities for my major (Biochemistry) and I personally could see myself going to any of these three schools. I have no idea how I'm going to make this decision so any advice or thoughts would be appreciated! :)

Hi Yankman- I think “Major” is most important in choosing a SUNY. For any science major, engineering or health science, Buffalo is the the best choice. (Son is a recent UB grad and will be happy to answer questions if you haev them. He was accepted to all 15 of 15 schools he applied to, including Binghamton. While he loved Bing, we found out through a current student to stay away for Math and Engineering. Further research indicated that it had a much newer engineering program than UB and SBU and that likely impacts it.) The school is not far from the airport that services JFK, LGA and ISP so it has been easy to get to and from school. For engineering, they havea job/career fair each fall which helped at securing paid summer internships and full time employment when he graduated. If internships are important to you, see what they do for biochem majors.

Good luck to you.

I do not know the ranking of each SUNY for your major, but I do know that Binghamton seems to always be the top ranked SUNY in all college rankings. I have never seen a national ranking of schools where Binghamton is not the first SUNY ranked.

That is not to say I you would not get a great education at Buffalo or Albany.

Morrismm, you are recalling old rankings. Binghamton still does benefit from dated recollections that it once was a decent school but both Stony Brook and College of Environmental Science and Forestry are rated higher by USNEWS, for example.

The Honors College at Albany offers some real advantages including both academic - small honors seminars - and practical/administrative - honors dorms (sections of regular quads, calmer & more low-key social), early registration/ priority. My daughter is a freshman who is glad that she chose Albany Honors over Binghamton (non-honors). She is one of many who got priority for a research lab placement & support applying for internships, beginning freshman year.

Hi Yankman- at the present time I have one son who is a senior at Buffalo (majoring in Environmental Design/Urban Planning and minoring in Architecture) and another son who just started Binghamton. He is not quite sure of major yet…Quite honestly I am not finding that Binghamton is living up to their reputation. Buffalo has been wonderful in every aspect; education, social life, faculty, organization, etc.In the four years I can honestly say I have not had one complaint and my son absolutely loves it there. Buffalo from what I understand has also moved up quite a bit in the rankings. Since my other son started Binghamton …he was a Spring admit this year…we have had one issue after another. Binghamton is basically run by the students and Buffalo is run by faculty. Even the buses at Binghamton are driven by the students. I also find in the surrounding area around Buffalo that there is a lot more to do. One thing you should know about Buffalo too is that it is a very big school. There are two campuses, North & South. They are about 5 miles apart. Binghamton is half the size of Buffalo. I also feel you would get a great education at either school but for all other aspects besides education I would choose Buffalo.

So where are you going?

@Yankman, I’m in the same boat you were in last year- currently between UB (honors college) and Binghamton (non-honors)- What did you decide? Are you happy with your school now? Any advice for a high school senior? Thanks for any input you may have
