Bio 110 vs Chem 110

Eventually my son will need to take both of these classes. He asked my opinion which to take first (he's looking for the easiest in freshman year). Does anyone have an opinion which class would be less demanding for an incoming freshman? I don't know if this makes a difference, but Bio 110 indicates that the labs are online. I would think that this would make the labs harder, since you are now in a classroom to ask questions. Any thoughts on that?????

My daughter took these classes. This is what she said: “Chem 110 was definitely worse. Bio 110 is straight memorization.”

Thanks. I will tell my son. Would you mind asking your daughter about bio labs online? Does she have a point of view whether that would be harder or easier? I think in class labs would be easier, but I really don’t know.

How was bio 220W and 230W ?

PortMom-She said she has never heard of an online lab, and she said it would be better to do it in class, to get help from each other.

Columbia-She took Bio 141 (intro physiology-loved it) and Bio 240W. She was not a fan of the plant part of 240W. She is not a bio major, she said they have to take 220W, 230W and 240W.

BIOL 110 was pretty easy. CHEM 110 is much more difficult and the labs are 4 hours and 10 minutes long. BIOL 110 labs are scheduled for 2 hours, but they typically end in an hour or less. I think we only had 3 lab meetings that lasted 2 hours. The fall BIOL 110 has labs that meet at a lab, the Spring BIOL 110 classes have labs online. You really only do like 4 experiments in the lab. Some of the meetings are small group discussions, prep for a lab, or quiz days. The first lab consisted of a trip to a small strip of woods to take pictures of animals and identify them (I’m not even kidding.) The following labs were a little more intense, but much more relaxed than high school (especially for those of us that took AP Bio.) Most of us finished lab and the homework early then ended up texting or on Twitter until lab was over. I had the 8:00 AM lab, so we’d even take turns going for coffee. Anyways, BIOL 110 labs are nothing to worry about. If your son did well in high school biology and still remembers what he learned, BIOL 110 should be pretty chill and balance out other stressful classes.

No matter what lab he ends up with, there is an online component of BIOL 110 lectures. It’s called Mastering Biology and is pretty neat. It’s interactive with videos and animations. He will have weekly assignments and quizzes (they’re all really easy as long as you understand the material.) I really didn’t even read the book–it goes into topics not covered in BIOL 110 and more in depth than BIOL 110. It’s also really heavy and like 2 inches thick. You can get the online version, but I still never really read it and I did well in the course.

I haven’t taken any of the 200-level bio classes yet. They are writing intense (hence the “w”) and I know you need CHEM 110 for some of them. BIOL 220W does not require CHEM 110 as a prerequisite.

Hope this helps. :-)

Well, this is probably rather late, but between chem 110 and bio 110, bio is normally easier for freshmen. For chem, you either get it or you don’t and that is why many people complain about it being hard. I took the AP classes and exams in high school (during the same year) and frankly enjoyed chem more, even if it was the harder class - I did not enjoy the sheer amount of stuff to memorize in bio.

As a freshman your son should not be allowed to take the bio labs online. From my experience that version is only for juniors and seniors. If bio is at all important to his major, he will never have the online labs. Bio labs are sooo much easier than chem labs. The time difference also helps a lot. Four hours was pretty long for me during my freshman year.

Yea I know. I’m a bio major and I got credit (from my old school) for 110 and 240W as well as all of the Gen Chem classes that we have to take. I’m taking 220W in the fall and 230W in the spring. I’m also taking Chem 210 this semester. Anyone have input on that class ?
