People who've taken bio1a (or know how to sign up),

How does enrollment work exactly? The website isn't really clear about it and my phase I is 9 days away...

This is what I'm getting....am I wrong?

Phase I: Enroll in Bio 1AL and section and use up the other 8-9 units on non bio classes
Phase II: Waitlist into Bio 1A lecture and discussion and wait for the list to be processed.

or do I waitlist in Phase I?

You register lab in Phase 1.

Sometime over the summer, you will get emailed a CEC or something like that and you will use that to register for Bio 1A during phase 2

so all I need to do is register for 1AL and I’m into 1A? yay, thanks

so how is Forte, Fischer, Malkin, and Meighan?

oh and when are office hours usually? (for fall)

forte is nice but boring
fischer is cool
malkin gets really excited about hard tests
but all 3 are good, very clear teachers overall and have hard but fair tests.

meighan on the other hand - i hate that man. how is he even allowed to teach still?? who could possibly not give him a terrible evaluation? he just enjoys makes horrible unnecessarily hard quizzes and tests and makes even the interesting material a nightmare. thinks he is so important and so smart in inventing his wonderfully complicated and completely unfair grading schemes.

Malkin = great, very clear
Forte = less articulate than the other professors; as a result, a lot of times i can’t understand the point he’s trying to make; tests on things that he briefly mentions in class sometimes
Fischer = great, very clear
Meighan = not really his fault he’s so bad, there’s so much to cover every week but he only gets 80 mins. in fact, he’s really good in office hours when he has time to actually explain things in-depth.

so in my opinion, forte sucks, meighan is good if you go to his office hours, the other 2 are awesome

when were/are office hours for the semester that you took it?

For some reason, everyone hates Meighan. Personally, I think the guy is a really interesting lecturer and completely hilarious in his mannerisms. Tip: Read the lab manual first, then go to lab lecture (or webcast it). They may be confusing separately, but they make much more sense together. Lab lecture will be confusing if you do not at least skim the lab manual beforehand. If you go into lab lecture without at least having some idea of what he’s going to talk about, you will be bored and lost the entire time.

That said, I find Meighan incredibly engaging. I have a tendency to space out and not pay attention during lectures, but Meighan’s lightning-fast pace and shrill voice prevent your mind from wandering. I also really like that he completely overemphasizes things when he thinks they’re important. Many professors will just skim over things that are important to them; Meighan will repeat those things at least four times and underline them on the board. Oh yeah, don’t bother trying to take notes, unless you’re watching the webcast - you won’t be able to keep up. Just sit back, pay attention, and let it all soak in.

His tests were just so pointlessly difficult though. In our semester they switched genetics and physiology in lecture but kept the order for lab. So we had all these ridiculous genetics problems on our midterm that nobody had any idea how to do… And the final was just insane. Like look through 5 microscopes and figure out what each is then put them in order and answer 3 other really detailed questions in 90 seconds?? And all that memorization of species/orders/classes and freaking clam anatomy??? Yeah not a fan. Bio 1A lecture was cool though.

AHHHH!!! I get soooo mad when the switched the sections in lecture and not lab. Made it REALLY feel like I was taking two completely different classes that didn’t reinforce anything.

lol thanks guys…i have to ask again…anyone know where I can find the office hours for next semester? e-mailing the profs hasn’t helped…

office hrs are usually right after the class, so 9-10am MWF. Meighan is kinda all over the place.
