Bio 1b and Chem 3a

Do you recommend taking these courses in the same semester? Each one has a 4-hour lab every week, i'm kind of apprehensive.

When I took Bio1B, only one of my labs actually took up the entire lab period; we were released fairly early on all the other days, sometimes even 2 hours early. The Bio1B labs aren't really "labs" in the way that you would think. They're just assignments in which you observe things and fill out worksheets, stuff like that. Some of them are really dumb and pointless. In terms of time, I think it's doable, but then again, it depends on how many units you're taking.

i will most likely take 15 units next semester.

That's too many for chem 3a and bio1b, unless it's plus another 4 unit humanities course + decal or p/np course.

you don't want to take too many units and risk your gpa while taking these premed courses.

hey unlimited, how did you know I was pre-med?

Chem 3A and Bio 1B are part of the standard Pre-Med Weeder series. Why else would you take both?

my floormate's taking bio 1b and chem 3a next semester...total of 19.5 units

tastyb33, i heard bio 1b is less intense than bio 1a. Are materials just easier for bio 1b?

Hmm...sounds tough, especially if you are thinking of taking a math course along with these two. I would agree with unlimitedx's comment that 'That's too many for chem 3a and bio1b, unless it's plus another 4 unit humanities course + decal or p/np course.

you don't want to take too many units and risk your gpa while taking these premed courses."

Bio 1b shouldn't be too tough but Chem 3a is a pretty notoriously difficult course so...I would think twice before taking these two together.

what was your experience with chem 3a? Did it take much of your time?

I'm taking Chem3A right now. Yeah, it's pretty tough and takes a lot of time to do problems (some of these things you just have to practice over and over, like drawing molecules and figuring out projections and stuff).

are you pre-med also?

I'm taking Bio 1b and Chem 3B now. Chem labs take sometime (prelabs & write ups), but bio labs are a joke. If you know how to study, taking both chem and bio1b simultaneously won't be a problem. Bio 1b = memorization. Chem 3a/b = solving practice problems.
