Bio 1B + Chem 1A?

Helloooo, freshman pre-med here. I was going to take for Spring '10 PH 116, Math 16B, Chem 1A. I was going to take an R&C to round it out, and enroll for Bio 1B just in case I didn't get into an R&C. Well now I'm waitlisted and probably won't get into an R&C, and so will have to stick w/ Bio 1B. The L&S Adviser (Jesus something) said I shouldn't take Bio 1B concurrently with Chem. What is your guys' view on this...?

Should I go looking for some random 4 unit breadth or just stick w/ the bio?

Also, what is your view of taking Chem 3A during the summer?

Thanks! Good luck on finals everyone! :)

Bio 1B with Chem 1A is very doable.

It seems doable seeing as how Bio 1B labs aren’t that difficult and time consuming as regular labs.

loll&sadviser. Bio 1b is easy as cake provided you study 2 days before the midterm/finals (more if you want a solid A…=( damn first midterm)

Yaaay thanks! This makes me feel loads better. I come from a really sucky, urban school and didn’t learn much and I’m worried it’s gna kick my butt. Now I’m a bit worried 13 units is too little though…

Yeah, the advisers are not that great… I didn’t want to trust them, especially after I went to a workshop and the presenter claimed that “med schools think 16A is harder than 1A, no worries.” So not true! All the UCs know the difference for sure.

don’t even worry about units. You can easily make them up later on. Should set your weeder classes as priority.

As long as you have a couple of AP credit I wouldn’t really so much about unit standing and you are gonna take summer school, which will catch you up with your peers. Also I find that unless you are really outstanding (freshman and have 90 units) units doesn’t really dictate ****. My friend has way more units than me (also took 10 units over summer in comparison to my 6) and my telebears still beat her by 2 days.

I had a 3 in AP Lit, 4 in AP Govt, and 4 in American history, how many units does that come out to? XD

Aphrodite take what you feel is comfortable regardless if it’s 13 or 20 units. You will take summer school and probably 15+ later on so units shouldn’t be a priority now, especially as a freshman. BTW what do you think is better? Low grades in pre-reqs for med school or a better telebears???

Of course she can handle an extra class, but the question is will the extra class take time from her other more important classes (math, bio, chem). For med school you are gonna have to be rocking a 3.5+ GPA. If you do add an extra class just make a decal or a easy class. I don’t know about Leftist, but I know a lot of freshman that took 13 their whole freshman year and those that took 16 units didn’t take pure core classes. Even though she is only taking 13 units you have to take into account that she is clocking 20.5 hours a week in class time which is manageable and not “taking it easy.”

I’d muuuch rather take an easy breadth class than R&CII and end up wasting time reading novels instead of working on math/chem/bio. I just don’t know when I would take R&C then?.. Wouldn’t my classes become even harder later on? >_<

Any easy breadth recommendations ? haha.

And Calbear2012, I def think lower grades in pre-med reqs are much worse than a bad telebears :X.

I think taking your RCII later when you are a junior is a wise decision. The MCAT has a verbal and essay section that trips up a lot of people since they are so used to equations and science. Taking your RCII will give you practice in writing and a feel for essays and reading. Its been only a year since my last English class and I already notice my essay writing skills going downwards.

I am waitlisted 1 in SE Asian R5B and I’m pretty sure I’ll get in (I had the same professor last semester and she’s very chill on these things, as long as I drag in a desk it’s all good). I don’t know if I should take on the 17 units or just stick with 13? I’m planning to take Chem 3A and 3AL in the summer, if that helps.

Thanks for all the help guys! :D
