Bio/Biochem at UT Vs. A&m

Which school is better for someone who is definitely planning on going onto medical school?

I would be majoring in biology/biochemistry.

I have heard good things about both. UT is obviously the better school, but might be harder to get a 3.8+ gpa at than A&m. Obviously, I'll need the very high gpa to get into medical school, so this is a major factor in my decision.

Also, i'll have to consider which college provides better volunteering/research opportunities and med school preparation/support.

does anyone have any useful info/tips they can give me?

Go to the better school. You can’t predict your college GPA as a high school student, so just choose a school without reading into all that stuff. Look at it this way: Being at a school that makes you happier will result in it being EASIER to get a 3.8+ than if you were at a school you didn’t like as much.

^ Well, maybe. Some tend to apply themselves more so academically in stressful/dissatisfying situations as a means to move on to great things (medical school). Furthermore, excess sociability could result in academic negligence. Your GPA will be the result of your diligence and ability.

…that being said, you’re going to spend four years at this school, so you will probably want to pick somewhere you will be comfortable. Both schools have good programs (although UT probably has a better reputation), but Austin and College Station are very different places.

Focusing on mncaacd’s last sentence:

Both universities will do a great job preparing you for medical school. Once you accept that both will prepare you well, any differences beyond that are marginal. More important in your decision should be school atmosphere, something that distinguishes UT and A&M as polar opposites and rivals.

Both schools are great, and you can’t really go wrong with either one. However, I do know that A&M has lots of pre med support which is really encouraging. For example they have the pre med society: <a href=“- Texas A&M University”>- Texas A&M University;

Also keep in mind that they have different grading systems for GPA. UT counts A- as less GPA points, whereas A&M counts all A’s as a 4.0 (even if it is an A-). So your GPA might be higher going to A&M.

Ultimately though, you should go wherever you like best.whereas

^UT has plenty of pre-med organizations as well

Also, if you plan on going to any of these[/url”>http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/contact.html#MedicalSchools]these schools, then an A- at UT will count as an A on your application.

Again, this goes to show that neither school will hurt your chances of getting accepted.

Also, note that the competition at UT is nothing compared to the competition in medical school, so there is no point in worrying about competition at either school.
