I need some advice from any current students.

I'll be a freshman this fall and I'm trying to figure out what courses I want to register for. I intend on being a biology major, and I'm considering going pre-med but I likely won't. Anyways, the registration material they sent me said that it is highly recommended that all intended bio majors take both Chem 102a and Bio 110a first semester freshman year, so I need to take those. But, I also wanted to take calc 155a while it's fresh in my head from high school. I'm just worried about the heavy load that Calc, Chem, and Bio all in the first semester would be (my fourth class would be a freshman writing seminar, which is a much easier class, so I'm not worried about that).

Any advice? Is this a common schedule for freshman bio majors? Or is it way too difficult and I should rethink my schedule?

I talked to my advisor on Thursday about the same thing. She said that taking Calc along with Chem and Bio might be too big of a workload for my first year. So I’ll be taking a language instead (along with a seminar), and I’ll take Calc next year. I’d imagine that if you did well in calculus last year, then a year break should mean nothing but a little refresher/reminder to get you back in the swing of things.

Calc-chem-bio is not uncommon but it’s pretty killer. I agree with GoodDoc, calc is probably the best thing to push back. I don’t think it’s a prerequisite for any sophomore year Bio classes (I could be wrong, check on that!) .

If you decide you can handle it after the first semester, you could even start calc your second semester rather than pushing it off an entire year.
