I am in my first semester and am planning to transfer into bioengineering. Looking at the articulation agreements on Assist for UCs with my counselor, it seems like I will need to complete nearly 110 credits not including the strongly recommended courses which aren’t articulated at my college.
Does anyone who have been in a similar situation know any community colleges that have those courses? What I mean to say is: what is the best CC that would fulfill the requirements for bioengineering? Also, if the 110+ credits seem about right to transfer into bioengineering? Any tips and advices would be GREATLY appreciated.
I realized that CCs near the universities usually have a better coverage of the required courses. But anyone who have experience transfering in as an engineer major, what was your course load like, how long did it took,…etc?
110 units does seem like a lot. I calculated somewhere between 70-85 semester units for a bioengineering transfer from my CC to UCLA, so I’m guessing you mean 110 quarter units, which seems about right. I would look at classes offered at community colleges near you and choose the one you like most and the one that might have all the classes you need.
My CC is semester-based. I remarked to my counselor about how high the numbers came out to be and she just casually told me that it can take three years. Some of these info seemed new to her though, so she isn’t that experienced I think.
A lot of the counselors I’ve talked to seem to know very little about engineering major and the requirement. Try looking for a STEM counselor or talk to the professors in your engineering or bio department.
@Ohm888
I’m planning to do my required courses at Antelope Valley College and, the rest that aren’t articulated, at Diablo Valley College. I am looking to transfer either into UCSD, UCB, or UCLA. I feel like that’s going to be a lot of required courses(100+ credits), so should I cut one out? Unless I can handle 20 credits semester, adding in intersession and summers while keeping my GPA a 3.7+. Right now I am taking 19 credits with A+ so far, but I have mastered those concepts in high school already. I am part of a research team and the STEM club(about 10hours per week commitment).
Strongly recommended courses at AVC (1):
Bio 201 (UCLA)
Strongly recommended at Diablo Valley (5):
Engr 110 (Berkeley)
Two from a list (Berkeley)
Engr 136 (UCLA)
Engr 230 (UCLA)
What I personally would do is leave off the two recommended for UCLA and instead do the three Engr for Berkeley, assuming that’s your first choice. Also, keep in mind, depending on your GPA, you might later determine that Berkeley is out of reach, so can tack on the UCLA ones instead. And UCLA isn’t dumb - they’ll pick up you only have so much time and chose the Berkeley engineering courses. They also know most ppl don’t get into Berkeley, so having a good assortment of engr, even if not those two recommended, I don’t think will hurt your chances at UCLA if they want you. Just my opinion, of course.
Omitting the 2 from UCLA leaves you with 18 courses (4 a semester, plus two in summer), assuming the pre-reqs work out, which can be an issue. (If you can fit a UCLA recommended in, fine. I’m just giving the minimum.)
Thank you so much, @Ohm888! I am very grateful for your time and advices. I also have the general education requirements for the specific UCs or I could just do the IGETC. I’ll just stick some in intersession. I really appreciate you laying everything out so clearly.
You will have english and math done and three sciences. Unless a college has something specific (unlikely), you are only missing one more GE course (either in arts/humanities or social sciences). Just leave as is. You don’t need GE finished to transfer.
If you get accepted, you can take that last course (or two) in summer at your CCC before you start the UC. Berkeley requires a history, amer institutions and a diversity course to graduate (you don’t need them to transfer). Taking two in summer will fullfill the remaining GE and get rid of having to take two of those courses at Cal. (You’ll still need the third.)
Berkeley engineering:
Four humanities/social science course requirements for the College of Engineering. Two must come from: ARTS AND LITERATURE; HISTORICAL STUDIES; INTERNATIONAL STUDIES; PHILOSOPHY AND VALUES; SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES.
UCLA
Applicants must complete at least one course from the humanities or social sciences for UC eligibility, and are encouraged to complete up to four courses in those areas and one life science.
Couldn’t find UCSD.
They don’t all have to be done but looking at above I guess you should at least try for 1-2. Someone else might have a better answer to this.
For Berkeley, it says:
“…applicants must complete the specific courses indicated as English R1A and R1B
equivalents to be considered for admission.
…The remaining four humanities/social science requirement courses are not
considered for admission purposes but are required for graduation.”
So I only need the two english.
For UCLA:
“Applicants are not required to complete the HSSEAS General Education Requirements in order to be admitted,…”
So I think we’re good. I would just do the general education courses over the summer right before I start at the UC.
I am really thankful for your ever untiring support to me, a stranger : )
