Bioinformatics major?

I got accepted to UCSC, and after taking AP bio at my school, I realized that not everything biology offers enlightens and attracts me to my proposed molecular biology major. I actually have a greater passion toward math, and the great feeling of satisfaction after correctly solving a very hard problem.

My question is if the bioinformatics major is right for me? I haven't really heard much about it, and i know it doesn't matter what major i take for medical school, but would this be a good major to fall back on in case I don't do well enough to get in to medical school?

If this major is a dead end or not what I'm looking for, what major would you recommend for me who has a great interest in math, and a fair interest in science.

What about math?

Supplement it with courses in areas of application, like statistics, computer science, economics, finance, bioinformatics, etc. that you may be interested in. Such courses in areas of application can help you with job and career prospects in those areas. You can take the pre-med courses around a math major, but they may squeeze out the other areas of application.
