Biological Science Major vs. Molecular Biology Major.

I need help on what major to choose. Most likely, I will be doing pre-med and trying to get into medical school, so both of these majors fulfill the courses needed on the mcats. What major do you guys think would be more beneficial to get into?

They’re both under the biology department thus they are pretty similar at the start so it might make sense to actually take some biology classes, get some experience, and then decide what to major in. I don’t think you need to make that decision before you even get to Pitt.

Molecular biology is more challenging, but it really is going to be about where your interests lie.

It makes no difference for med school. If you want to stand out, major in theology or philosophy or international relations. Think outside the box, OP, if you want, but you’ll still have to get As in Bio and Orgo and Calc. You can’t fool med school admissions–they’ve seen it all.

@jkeil911 brings up a great point- you can major in ANYTHING under the sun for med school, as long as you get those pre-med classes in there too. I have a friend in med school at Pitt who majored in Anthropology for her undergrad.

Pick courses you are interested in and see what kind of major it leads to. Don’t go in assuming you have to do Bio or Chem. Especially because you still have 4 years ahead of you- if med school ends up not being in the cards (for whatever reason) having a good backup degree for work or grad school will become even more important.
