Who is the best/easiest biology 101 professor? I've heard about Kelly Hogan being very difficult, but I would like to get feedback from you guys. Has anyone taken her course? If so, how was your experience (grade, hw, test, quiz)?

Please let me know any other information that may he useful.

HW is very easy. Go to all the classes. She gives polling questions in class that can give you up to two points on your three exams. Her exams are challenging because most questions test multiple concepts. She drops one exam grade (of three). That allows you to get used to her testing style on the first one and not ruin your average. She offers supplemental instruction sessions, which a lot of people attend. I did not attend. The final exam represents 44% of your grade. Her grading scale is slightly modified in that 92 and above are A’s. Her overall grading history for Biol 101 is 6% A’s, 31% B’s, 45% C’s and 18% D’s. I thought she was a great professor and plan to take another course with her.

Thanks for your helpful information. I appreciate it. How about Jean S. DeSaix for Bio 101?

I’ve never had her as a professor. She and another professor run the health professions advising office. She seems very nice in that environment. Here are her historical grading stats for Biol 101. 15% A’s, 23% B’s, 48% C’s, 14% D’s.

I wouldn’t suggest her. [DESAIX, J S - blinkness](Loading...)

I had the honors Bio section with DeSaix and absolutely loved her - it was one of my favorite classes. That said I worked my tail off to get an A-. But I’d do it again. I didn’t have any background in Bio, either.

^Thanks! I’m having her in the Fall

My strategy was to type everything she said in class and to take typed notes on the textbook, then flashcards flashcards flashcards before the test. Bio is all about the systems - krebs cycle, evolution, stuff like that, you need to know much more than vocab. Know how everything in a chapter relates to each other (literally, how do all the subheadings relate in the big system of things?). DeSaix’s questions were very much focused on the minutiae. But, again, I loved her and her class. Frankly, I don’t think there will be an easy Bio 101 class at Carolina, so just put your head down and enjoy the ride.

What about bio 101 with hogan vs bio 101 honors with de saix? Who is easier to get a good grade in?

Sorry this is somewhat unrelated, but where are you guys finding the historical grade distributions for a particular teacher?

Various websites such as blinkness.com and myedu.com list them. I don’t know how accurate they are because they sometimes spit out different values…but usually you can get the gist of what the distribution will be like from these two sites.
