Some Help?

Hi, I'm a little new at this but I wanted to ask any of you about your opinions on Chemistry 101 with Lab- is it hard, how are the professors, and how much work does it take to do well? And I'm going to be a freshman if it helps.

Almost everyone I know is taking Chem 101 and Chem 101L, lol. Chemistry at UNC has a reputation for being hard but very, very good. Pick-a-Prof and ratemyprofessors.com can help you out on the professor front. Have you taken any Chemistry before? And are there any Chem majors out there who can comment?

I've Brian Hogan for Chemistry.Any comments?

Chem at UNC is hard....been there, done that, and still doing it. I've never heard how Hogan is for Chem 101, but I know he usually teaches biochem (chem 430?), the people I know that have had him for that say he's hard though. The 101 lab is pretty cool, though you'll have a love-hate relationship with DataStudio really quickly (more hate than love I'm sure). Don't stress over it, you'll be fine...we may be a little crazy when we're done, but we've all survived it one way or another and you will too!

And, just because I feel like including this, Lisa Volaric is really nice and easy to talk to, if any of you have her for Chem 101.

Brian Hogan has reviews on both pickaprof.com and ratemyprofessors.com. I guess he's hard but a good teacher. I have Chamberlin... any comments? CarolinaGirl, are you a chem major? Thanks so much for your input! I'm thinking about Biochemistry right now... Eeek! LOL: ).

I'm a bio mjr with a chem minor (the thought of taking biochem and p-chem scares me). Most of my friends are chem mjrs and for various reasons, I'm around the chem dept. quite a bit, so I hopefully can help with most of the questions. No clue about Chamberlin, though....sorry (haven't had her/don't know of anyone that has).

Oh, cool! That's okay about Chamberlin. Yeah, Biochem kind of scares me, too, but I really want to do it, so we'll see how Chem 101 goes! LOL. Thanks again... It's nice to talk to someone who has experience with Chem at UNC! : )

Oh, and I had one more question! What is the Chem fraternity at UNC called? I was thinking of joining since I'm going to be entering the world of Chemistry, lol. CarolinaGirl, do you know what I'm talking about? : )

The Chem Frat at UNC is Alpha Chi Sigma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) It's great....you'll love it!

Can u double major in Biology and Biochemistry?

Yeah, you can pretty much double mjr in anything---it's all about how much work you want to put into it. I think it's like 9 extra chem classes, 3 math classes and 2 more physics classes....the advising site, should give the requirements for both mjrs (Biochem is part of the chem mjrs when you look...not bio)

So from what everyone is saying, Brian Hogan is a hard but good teacher...so is it possible to secure an A in that class? And does he use the bell curve and if so, what percentage of students receive the A?

Have you looked at Pick-a-Prof? That site has grade percentages. I'm sure it's possible to make an A in Hogan's class, but I really wouldn't get hung up on "getting the A"... College is about learning, and you're not going to make straight As. Many of my sophomore friends at UNC made their first Bs and Cs EVER freshman year. It's going to happen, lol. ; )
