I was originally going to major in BME but suddenly started to change my mind thinking of majoring in Biology or Biochemistry.
Is bio/biochem program in RPI good compared to other good arts and science schools like cornell university?

um why biology/biochemistry over BME/Chem E?

How can you compare RPI with Cornell in physical sciences?

I was going to do BME but changed my mind to do pre-med.

Because I applied to all engineering schools, I can’t do anything about it now. I can’t change from engineering school to arts and science schools. So what I am trying to do is doing pre-med at RPI by majoring in Biology or Biochemistry. So I wanted to know how good Biology/Biochemistry program in RPI is compared to other famous arts and science schools.

My daughter just switched to a BME major with a Chem minor. With that combination she ends up with all the same classes as Pre-med. She wasn’t looking for it- it just ends up that way. That is with the BME- Materials track (there are 3 areas of BME engineering you can follow at RPI).

Metalhunter, you may want to consider if you want to do undergraduate research as part of your pre-med program. If so, you will find that RPI’s Biotech Center is on of the most advanced on the planet. As far is I know the Bio and BME will have projects going on there.

[Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer](http://www.rpi.edu/research/biotech/index.html)

kgrmom, that’s exactly what I was planning to do.
But I got confused between biotechnology and bioengineering,
so I realized that I planned out my major wrong.
I learned that i had to do bio or biochem for biotechnology.
How is your daughter doing in BME with materials concentration?
Does she say it’s hard? Is she planning to go to med school?
If she is, is she getting a satisfactory gpa for med school?
Can you ask your daughter, if you can, if I can still do biotechnology such as creating new medicine, stem cell research, or genetic engineering stuff by majoring in biomedical engineering in RPI? thank you sooooo much!!

Hi Metalhunter-

My daughter is not planning at this time for med school. She is ROTC- Navy and looking at a military career actually BME-materials at RPI focuses on EXACTLY those things you mention- stem cell research, genetic engineering, etc. They have a huge research dept. Actually- that beautiful new Biomed building there at RPI has zero classes in it- it is 100% research and professor offices. It really is a great place to be for this.

She just declared the major- last month after spending the year deciding between ChemE and BME and taking general courses that would apply mostly to both. Yes- it is a difficult major. A lot of lab time in some of the classes. Visit the BME and website and it does a good job outlining each section of BME and the classes you need.

I am majoring in biology at RPI and I am planning on going to a naturopathic medical school?

and ignore the question mark! haha

Now I am going to major Biochemistry as my pre-med major for sure.
Do you know anyone who is doing pre-med at RPI by any chance?
What do they feel about the pre-med program?
Do they feel prepared for MCAT?
Do you know the exact or approximate acceptance rate to med schools by any chance?

One of my daughter’s floormates is doing pre-med. She is a freshman also. You don’t take the MCAT until later right? If so, I don’t think she could really answer that question right now. I would have to wonder though why should wouldn’t feel prepared. Those would be great questions for the Biomed dept, they would probably answer them over the phone . Have you visited RPI yet?

Right now- I’m lucky to have any kind of conversation with my daughter as it is the last 10 days of classes- yikes! Then exams. There is juuuuuust a tad of stress going on campus at the moment. Actually it’s more like I try not to call- she’ll call if she needs to.
If I happen to find out something though I will let you know :)
