Biology or Chemistry?

I can't decide which one to apply to, and I'm reluctant to apply open options science because I know it's hard to switch into biology. Which department is better? (I know bio is more competitive--I'm pretty confident that I'll get in.) I'm taking AP Chem now, but I haven't taken bio since 9th grade, so I'm more familiar with chem (I like them both). If I choose bio and change my mind, would it be easy to switch to chem? (I know that the reverse is difficult.) I want to enjoy my college experience but still be able to get a good job or into a good graduate school--I'm not thinking med school at the moment, but I might change my mind. Any advice would be appreciated...my whole application is done but I haven't submitted it because I can't decide!

I would just go with open options… your logic doesn’t really work out. If you can’t maintain a high enough GPA in college to switch into the bio program, then I doubt you’d be able to keep up a decent GPA in the bio program if you were accepted now.

I definitely COULD switch into biology, but it would be a hassle. I’m just trying to prevent unnecessary stress later on, that’s all. Does anyone have any actual opinions on the two programs?

Well I’m a bio major so I’m a little biased lol but one of my best friends is a chem major. IMO both programs are top quality…although of course I think bio is better ;). In terms of size and the amount of oppurtunities available you may be better off going with bio, but ultimately you should go with what you LOVE. Either major would put you on a good path for grad/med school or work after graduation.

The degree of difficulty of switching majors will ultimately depend upon when you decide to switch (and of course which program you are switching into/out of). Sorry I don’t have any better advice as I’ve never actually changed majors myslef, however, I can tell you that my best friend switched from English to Psych BEFORE switching to chem spring semester of freshman year. At that point she only had to take 1 (maybe 2) courses over the summer and she is right on track to finish with our class.

The best advice I can give is that if you know you want to change majors make sure you do it long before the registration period for the next semester so you don’t get screwed during scheduling.

Take whatever you find more interesting. As long as you keep your gpa it shouldn’t be too difficult, but switching into bio from chem would probably be a little harder since bio is more competitive. Also I’ve liked my bio teachers more than my chem teachers, but maybe that’s because I find chem kind of boring, or I just have had bad luck with chem teachers.
