I really torn about choosing between UC Davis and Cal Poly. I just recently got accepted into UC Davis for Biotechnology, and got into Cal Poly for Microbiology.

I love both majors! But I'm concerned about the campus curriculum and if I would honestly fit in amongst the student body. I'm planning on visiting each campus in April.

Also, Cal Poly was my original first choice and Davis my second, but now I'm starting to reconsider.

I would really like to know your opinions about each college so I can feel a bit more confident in my decision.

The UCs are known for biology.The UCs have more funding for research and may offer more research experience. For example, my nephew did a lot of stem cells research at one lower UC and that helps him getting into a medical school. The Cal Polies are known for engineering. I still think UC Davis is better than Cal Poly SLO.

I’m a bio major (marine), so of course Cal Poly might be different for microbiology, but I researched them and toured their campus and was generally unimpressed with their offerings.

I think Davis is your best bet. They have a really great biology program. Also, you never know if your interests will change in the next few years and you can’t change your major at Cal Poly

For Bio, I agree that UCD would be a better school.

And you CAN change your major in Cal Poly, it just depends on your intended major and your Cal Poly GPA. It takes a bit more planning than other universities to change major.

@OP
For class sizes, Cal Poly’s classes would be smaller, especially for your major classes. Typically the maximum is around 30 people at most. And the classes are all taught by professors, not TAs.

Cal Poly, until this year, has this pretty lousy main math and science department building. They just tore it all down and is in the process of building a brand new science research building. So all the science programs should benefit from this upcoming new infrastructure.
