I graduated a little over a year ago with a BS in biology. Like many i intended to go on to do something in the health field. I volunteered in a hospital a bit and realized i really don't like being around sick people.

I got a job as a health inspector and i make 54k a year. I also get a pension that's worth about 8k a year and currently free health insurance. The job is incredibly easy and i don't mind it at all. I actually kind of enjoy it. The problem is there isn't much room for growth. I'd max out at 75k in my current title or 85k if i got a promotion. I'm not really learning many skills that would make me valuable to other employers.

So, would it be crazy for my to throw away a decent paying job that i enjoy to go back to school for computer science? I'd have to take all the undergrad prereqs before i could even apply to a masters program so we're talking 3 or 4 years before i'd be done. I know job satisfaction reasons are important, but from strictly a financial point of view, would this switch pay off? I'm turning 24 in a few months.

I have uncles that were programmers during the dot com bust and i've seen how they struggled throughout the years. Is the field any better now?
